NOVI, Mich. — Detroit Catholic Central, the Novi private school whose football team has long been a statewide power, is now the top team in Michigan in one closely watched poll after a 27-20 win over Orchard Lake St. Mary’s.

The Shamrocks are 7-0. In the latest statewide Super 25 they appear as Novi Detroit Catholic Central (Division 1): 7-0, up one spot from No. 2 the week before, as there is a new No. 1 team in the state after Week 7.

The program is among Michigan’s most prominent Catholic school athletic programs, particularly in football, and it has won multiple state football championships.

The loss dropped Orchard Lake St. Mary’s to 5-2. Metro Detroit zone rankings for Week 8 also list Catholic Central first, ahead of Clarkston, which is 7-0 after beating Lake Orion 56-21.

Closer to Novi, South Lyon beat South Lyon East 21-10, leaving South Lyon at 5-2 and South Lyon East at 6-1, and Walled Lake Western rolled past Walled Lake Northern 77-28 to reach 6-1.

Neighboring Northville also returned to the statewide conversation with a convincing win over Belleville.
