Southfield Police Use Controlled Crash to Capture Armed Suspects After High-Speed Chase

Southfield, Michigan: A Bold Police Maneuver to Capture Suspects

In a dramatic turn of events on the early morning of October 18, 2024, police in Southfield, Michigan, made headlines by intentionally crashing into a speeding SUV to apprehend three men wanted for a series of serious crimes. The incident unfolded around 2:42 a.m. on the Lodge Freeway, leaving many in the community astounded.

A Stolen Jeep and a Murder Link

It all began when officers were patrolling the area near 10 Mile and Evergreen roads. They received word that a maroon 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee had entered Southfield. Little did they know, this was no ordinary vehicle; it had been reported stolen on October 6 and was linked to a shocking murder that occurred in Detroit on October 11, as well as a larceny case just days prior in Garden City.

The Chase Begins

As officers spotted the SUV speeding down the Lodge near Northland Drive, they sprang into action. They tried to box it in, but the driver had other ideas, swerving out of the way and even striking a patrol vehicle in the process. This only escalated the situation, as the officers knew that those in the Jeep could be armed and dangerous.

High-Speed Pursuit

What followed was a high-speed chase, with speeds exceeding 100 mph. “Our priority was to apprehend these potentially dangerous individuals quickly,” said Chief Elvin Barren of the Southfield police. They maintained pursuit until the situation came to a head, and police deemed it necessary to execute a controlled crash to bring the chase to a close.

The Aftermath of the Crash

Following the collision, the police took all three men into custody. As officers searched the vehicle, they discovered a 9 mm handgun with an extended magazine concealed underneath the driver’s seat. What raised eyebrows even more was that this firearm had been reported stolen back on August 14, 2024, in Redford.

The Suspects and Their Charges

The driver of the Jeep, identified as Brandon Vanarn Flowers, is facing a hefty list of charges including carrying a concealed weapon, a felony firearm violation, and fleeing and eluding police. He was arraigned in Southfield and given a $10,000 bond.

On the passenger seat was Vernon John Phalen Jr., who was handed over to the Garden City Police. He faces a slew of charges that include breaking and entering, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of a converted firearm. Phalen was arraigned on Monday in Garden City and received a stiffer bond of $100,000.

The third individual, an 18-year-old from Detroit, remains in police custody. His charges are still a work in progress as he is being handed over to Detroit police due to his possible involvement in the ongoing murder case.

Community Response

This incident has left many residents amazed, yet relieved that law enforcement acted decisively to get these suspects off the streets. It’s a clear reminder that officers often have to make tough decisions to ensure community safety, sometimes putting themselves in harm’s way.

Conclusion

As the investigation unfolds, community members are left pondering the realities of crime in their neighborhoods. Hopefully, this proactive approach by the police serves as a beacon of safety for all.
