Born on September 16, 1983, in Novi, Michigan, Melissa’s journey in education began with her graduation from Novi High School in 2002. She furthered her academic pursuits at Michigan State University, where she earned a degree in Elementary Education in 2006 and a Master’s Degree in Reading with an ELL endorsement. After a year of teaching in Atlanta, Georgia, she devoted 18 years to Frost and Tarkington Elementary Schools within Wheeling CCSD21.
Melissa was recognized for her enthusiastic teaching style, using creativity and humor to engage her students while fostering a genuine love for learning. Her approach not only made her classrooms welcoming but also left a profound impact on her students’ lives. In addition to her role as an educator, she shared her life with her husband, Scott Newmark, whom she married in 2011. Together, they raised three children: Benjamin, Emma, and Will.
Outside of her professional life, Melissa cherished family time, often indulging in cozy snuggles with her children and sharing leisurely movie nights with her husband. Summers were particularly special for the family as they spent time at their cottage on Lake Huron, where they created enduring memories. Melissa also enjoyed her “Girls’ Weekends” and belting out Taylor Swift songs during car rides, showcasing her fun-loving spirit.
Melissa’s passion for social justice was evident in her daily interactions; she was committed to making everyone feel included and valued. She was known affectionately as “Auntie M” and shared a close bond with her nieces and nephews, including Brady, Tessa, Luke, Molly, Shayna, and Adeline.
Survived by her husband Scott, children, parents Mike and Donna Roemer, Edward and Barbara Newmark, and siblings Jessica Weiss, Becky Collins, and Stefanie Newmark, Melissa’s legacy extends to her grandparents Jacqueline Spala and Sandra Newmark. She was preceded in death by her grandparents Edward Spala, Robert and Jean Roemer, David Newmark, and Gloria Turoff.
In her battle with Graves’ disease, Melissa remained resilient, inspiring those around her to embrace kindness. Her message to the world was clear, reminding everyone that in a world where one can be anything, the greatest choice is to be kind.
Memorial visitation for Melissa Roemer Newmark will take place on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Lake Zurich. A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at 11:00 AM, with an hour of visitation beginning at 10:00 AM at Barrington United Methodist Church in Barrington.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to “Everytown Moms Demand Action” in Melissa’s honor, continuing her advocacy for kindness and social justice. The community is uniting to remember Melissa, who left behind a legacy filled with love, empathy, and a steadfast commitment to the well-being of others.
