Modern public safety facility in Novi with police and fire services

News Summary

Residents of Novi have narrowly approved a $120 million bond proposal aimed at enhancing the city’s public safety infrastructure. The proposal was approved with 55% of the votes, allowing for significant improvements, including the construction of new police and fire stations. Additionally, the primary election included various other local races, with candidates vying for council positions in Westland and city commission in Plymouth. The election results reflect a commitment to improved public safety and community resources in the region.

Novi – In a decisive turnout during the primary election on August 5, 2025, residents of Novi have narrowly approved a $120 million public safety facilities bond proposal. According to unofficial results, the proposal received 5,237 yes votes, accounting for 55% of the total, while 4,323 no votes represented 45%, with all precincts reporting. The approval signifies an important investment in the city’s public safety infrastructure.

The approved bond will necessitate a levy of 1 mill on taxpayers over a period of up to 25 years. The funding is earmarked for significant improvements, including the construction of a new combined police and fire station facility, the creation of two new standalone fire stations, and the renovation of Fire Station No. 4. The overall costs will also cover the demolition of existing police and fire stations, along with the acquisition, construction, and furnishing of the new facilities.

The response from the community has been largely supportive, highlighting the necessity for modern facilities for both the police and fire services. Residents believe that adequate infrastructure is essential for the effective operation of public safety personnel.

In addition to the bond proposal, the primary election also featured races for the Westland City Council. A total of eight candidates secured their positions for the November election, competing for four full-term seats. Emily Bauman led this group with 15% of the votes, closely followed by Antoinette Martin and John Sullivan, each with 14%. Additionally, there are candidates vying for two partial six-week terms, with Antoinette Martin leading in that category as well with 18%.

In Plymouth, the City Commission race saw Scott Silvers fall just short of the cutoff, missing his chance by a mere nine votes with a total of 435 votes, representing 7%. The top contenders in Plymouth were Jennifer Kehoe with 15%, Alanna Maguire and Nick Moroz, both at 14%.

Meanwhile, in the education sector, Northville Public Schools successfully passed a sinking fund millage renewal proposal. This proposal received overwhelming support with approximately 73% approval in Wayne County and 66% in Oakland County. This funding initiative aims to ensure that schools can address ongoing maintenance and improvement needs.

The Pontiac mayoral primary results indicated that Council President Mike McGuinness is in the lead with 44.7% of the vote, while former Councilman Kermit Williams follows with 25%. This election is particularly significant as incumbent Mayor Tim Greimel is pursuing a congressional seat, creating an opportunity for a new mayor. Despite his past legal issues, McGuinness’ role in advancing city infrastructure has gained support from constituents. Yet, voter concerns remain regarding allegations of corruption and financial misconduct, which have led to an FBI investigation into Pontiac officials.

Former Mayor Deirdre Waterman, who is mentioned in connection with the ongoing investigation, garnered only 4% of the votes in the primary. Voters in Northville also opted to renew a 0.09-mill school bond that will extend through to 2035.

In Southfield, Mayor Kenson Siver emerged victorious with 56% of the vote, overshadowing former City Council President Sylvia Jordan, who received 40%. As the election results unfold, updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
