Howell, Michigan – Mary Lou Morris, a cherished matriarch known for her unwavering love for family and community, passed away on August 9, 2025, at the age of 91. Her death marks the end of a vibrant life filled with devotion, resilience, and cherished memories.

Mary Lou was born on February 4, 1934, in Highland Park, Michigan, to parents Emory Bishop and Malinda (Scherzer) Wickline. As the youngest of eight siblings, she was surrounded by family, a bond she greatly valued, although all her siblings have since passed away. In a love story that lasted over six decades, Mary Lou married her high school sweetheart, Jack Morris, on April 20, 1951, when they were just 17 and 18 years old, respectively. Jack Morris, an orphan, had formed a close relationship with her family during their teenage years.

Jack served in the army during the Korean War, which introduced significant challenges to the young couple. Despite their struggles during this time, including a period when Mary Lou raised their son, Jack Jr., while working full-time, she demonstrated remarkable strength and independence. Jack’s health had its ups and downs; he suffered a serious heart attack at age 33, but they continued to build a life together, moving to various locations to pursue new opportunities.

After relocating to Trout Creek in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula as advised by Jack’s doctor, the couple purchased a small store near Bond Falls Flowage and managed rental properties and campsites for years. They embraced the beauty and opportunities of outdoor life, establishing winter cross-country ski trails. After two decades in Trout Creek, they retired to Chassell, where they enjoyed gardening and fruit harvesting in their beautiful backyard for another 20 years.

Later in life, the couple moved to Howell to be closer to family and to receive support as Jack’s health declined. Jack passed away on January 1, 2016, after a loving marriage that lasted 65 years. Mary Lou’s family includes her son, Jack Jr., and his wife, Yngrid; her daughter, Suzanne, and her husband, Pat Macaluso; and several beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They cherished their time spent with her and hold fond memories, reflecting on her role as a guiding figure in their lives.

Mary Lou’s legacy is located not only within her family but also across the community she touched throughout her life. Memorial contributions in her honor may be made to Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly in Hancock, Michigan. A private interment will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery, paying tribute to a life rich in love and community spirit.
