A Rare Collection of Automotive History in Livonia Opened to the Public

In the heart of Livonia, tucked away in an industrial region, a gigantic garage sits discretely. This unassuming structure is home to a priceless collection of about 115 classic cars. This great enfoldment is the Roush Automotive Collection.

Each vehicle in this collection holds its unique historical significance. Many of them are associated intimately with one of the most well-known personalities in NASCAR racing and the auto industry. The center of this extraordinary collection features a shining silver Mustang, called “Old Crow”, paying tribute to Brig. Gen. Bud Anderson, a renowned flying ace of World War II.

The primary owner of this exceptional collection is Jack Roush. He’s not only known for his classic cars but also as the founder and co-owner of the NASCAR team RFK (Roush Fenway Keselowski) Racing. Roush has made a significant mark in the automobile, aerospace, defense, and theme park industries through his global company. His empire employs about 3,500 individuals around the world and recorded about $600 million revenue last year.

But, despite his grand success and fame, to his oldest child, Susan Roush McClenaghan, he is just a dad. Susan, herself a six-time national championship drag racer, is the program manager of this impressive collection.

Roush Automotive Collection: A Preservation of History

Back in the 1980s, Roush’s desire to place all his car collection under one roof led to the initiation of this now renowned archive. He believed his company’s history was linked with these unique vehicles and needed careful preservation. Some vehicles date back to his early racing years, while others are recent additions from his celebrated NASCAR victories. Placed on appreciation by a vast fan base, nearly 40 retired NASCAR race cars are exhibited at the front of this remarkable collection.

Adding to the historic allure, you might even spot the wreckage of a small aircraft, serving as a stark reminder of Roush’s two near-death experiences. This collection is not just stunning cars; it’s filled with captivating stories, some inspiring, others heartrending.

Unique Vehicles and their Fascinating Stories

The collection features a vehicle named “Sudden Death” with a reputation for being one of the most notorious cars in the street racing scene back in the day. Also, a pivotal part of the collection is the blue 1969 Mustang convertible that holds great importance in Roush’s empire’s formation. Interestingly, the oldest car in this expansive collection is a 1913 electric Brougham!

The collection’s location is open to the public from Monday to Friday, between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., giving auto-enthusiasts an opportunity to appreciate these glorious vehicles in all their splendor.
