Closed West Fenkell Bakery storefront with renovation tools

News Summary

West Fenkell Bakery, a cherished establishment in Livonia since 1927, has permanently closed its doors due to financial struggles and renovation conflicts. The owners, who took over in 2020, faced mounting pressures from rising costs and a lawsuit over unpaid rent. Despite the closure, they plan to continue the bakery’s legacy by selling bread at various locations. The community remains hopeful for the bakery’s future, emphasizing the emotional connection to the long-standing establishment.

West Fenkell Bakery Closes Its Doors Amid Renovation Conflicts and Business Challenges

In a bittersweet turn of events, West Fenkell Bakery, a beloved establishment in Livonia, has officially closed its doors permanently. The bakery, which has been a fixture of the community since 1927, announced its closure on August 20 via a heartfelt post on Facebook. Located at 15282 Middlebelt Road, this cherished bakery faced a myriad of financial struggles and difficult contract renegotiation issues that ultimately led to its demise.

From the Heart of Detroit to Livonia

West Fenkell Bakery, with roots dating back to its original location on Fenkell Avenue in Detroit, relocated to Livonia, where it continued to serve generations of customers. Justina and Kevin Chisholm took over the bakery in 2020 from the Loosle family, who had lovingly run it for 20 years. Their son, Casey Chisholm, managed the bakery in its final two years, striving to uphold the family legacy while navigating challenging waters.

Challenges and Closure

Unfortunately, the bakery faced mounting pressures when the former property owners, the Loosles, filed a lawsuit in May 2023. They alleged that the Chisholms had failed to pay rent and utilities for several months. The monthly rent for the bakery was set at $2,500 and had a planned increase of $250 upon lease renewal in January. However, the Chisholms’ predicament seemed to worsen as roof issues and other renovation requirements contributed to the business’s struggles.

With a contractual agreement holding the tenant responsible for maintaining the property, including the HVAC systems and exterior windows, the financial burdens began to take their toll. Despite the closure of its storefront, the Chisholms remain optimistic. They hope to continue the nearly 100-year legacy of the bakery by relocating it in the near future.

Continuing the Legacy

Even after the announcement of closure, West Fenkell Bakery did not hang its apron just yet. Throughout the summer, the bakery actively participated in pop-up events and sold bread at various locations, including the Lucky Squirrel craft fair and Camero Superfest. In fact, they have successfully transitioned to selling bread from a new location, delivering it to businesses like Value Center Marketplace and Eastern Market.

Starting in October, customers can look forward to ordering their favorite bread from 5 Mile Liquor, situated conveniently next to the former bakery site. Casey Chisholm has been dedicated, sometimes putting in up to 18 hours a day to keep the business afloat amid the ongoing challenges. Unfortunately, the situation remains financially precarious.

Tough Times Ahead

As the bakery faces continued challenges, Casey has signaled the possibility of temporarily raising the price of a loaf of bread from $3.89 to between $5-$6. This increase reflects the current market conditions, which have not been easy on small businesses. The Chisholms are devoted to transparent communication with customers about these pricing changes, emphasizing their commitment to quality. Their bread, known for its lack of preservatives, does not have the same shelf life as those from competitors that include additives.

A Community’s Heartfelt Connection

Despite the difficulties, the emotional connection remains strong. The Loosles have expressed hopes for the Chisholms’ future endeavors, recognizing the special place West Fenkell Bakery holds in many hearts. Casey has urged the community to support them by purchasing bread as they navigate this challenging chapter, reinforcing their commitment to keeping the spirit of the bakery alive without seeking direct financial assistance.

As we look back at the journey of West Fenkell Bakery, it’s clear that the love and dedication behind this establishment are what truly make it special. Here’s hoping for a bright future, wherever it may lead them next.
