Birmingham Celebrates Achievements at Gesher Human Services Awards Night

Birmingham was buzzing with excitement on the evening of September 12 as Gesher Human Services hosted its annual Awards Night at the Community House. This heartwarming event brought together staff members, participants, and supporters who have played a crucial role in the organization’s mission to empower individuals living with mental health challenges.

A Night of Celebration

The ambiance of the evening was filled with joy and gratitude as attendees gathered to celebrate the achievements of those who have dedicated their time and efforts to making a difference. Dani Gillman, Board Chair of Gesher, kicked off the event with some welcoming remarks, creating a warm atmosphere that encouraged connection and appreciation among all present.

Recognizing Outstanding Contributions

This year’s event featured a number of prestigious awards that spotlighted the incredible work being done within the community. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the 2024 Bridge Builder Award to Janet Aronoff. A co-founder of Kadima, the organization that merged with JVS Human Services in 2022 to form Gesher, Janet explained that her journey into philanthropy began with a desire to help those who faced injustices that she had not—an inspiring story that captured the hearts of everyone in attendance. For over 40 years, she has been a champion for individuals with mental health challenges, providing much-needed resources and support.

Debra Silver was honored with the Impact Award for her two decades of dedication to the JOIN program, which offers paid summer internships for Jewish college students. Debra’s efforts have created invaluable opportunities for young individuals to gain work experience and develop their skills, highlighting the importance of mentorship and community.

A Celebration of Employees

The Employee of the Year award went to Molisia Young, who joined Gesher in 2014 and has since become a beloved part of the Clubhouse. Molisia has shown incredible dedication in providing support and care to those in need, and her infectious spirit brightens the day for everyone at the organization.

Meanwhile, the Richard Ludwig Clubhouse Member Leadership Award was awarded to Felice Nida. Felice, who moved into one of Gesher’s community support homes in 2021, has taken on a leadership role at the Clubhouse, actively participating in various enriching activities, including cooking and joining the Detroit Symphony Orchestra music group. Her transformation has not only boosted her self-confidence but has also inspired many others in the community.

Community Partnerships

In addition to recognizing individuals, the organization also honored Eric Djordejevic, the General Manager of Saint John’s Resort, with the Employer of the Year Award for his contributions to creating job opportunities for individuals served by Gesher.

This year, Gesher impacted the lives of an astonishing 32,943 individuals across Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, and St. Clair counties, and CEO Paul Blatt expressed hopes to reach over 40,000 individuals in the coming year thanks to new workforce development projects. His vision of growth is both exciting and ambitious, showing a robust commitment to expanding services and support.
