It’s repurposed from a former office building, which means it’s already got a solid structure to help families feel at home while supporting them in this challenging time.

In an effort to ensure the safety of residents and the surrounding neighborhood, the state is taking measures such as hiring 24-hour private security for the shelter. This shelter isn’t just about providing a temporary place to stay; it’s part of a broader plan aimed at helping families find permanent housing within just one month. According to Massachusetts law, the state is required to provide shelter to unhoused families and pregnant women who meet specific criteria. However, recent changes to the state’s right-to-shelter law have led to a cap of 7,500 families in the Emergency Assistance program. Unfortunately, this means that some families may still be left waiting in limbo without the respite they desperately need.

Additionally, as new immigrant arrivals have surged, the state has been prompted to open overflow shelters to handle the increased demand. Many of the prior overflow shelters have transitioned to new models or have closed altogether, making the opening of this new shelter even more vital.

Individual Bed Demand Still High

89 individuals are on a waiting list for individual beds right here in Cambridge. This adds to the tension, especially with the upcoming closure of facilities like the Transition Wellness Center, which directly serves individuals in need.

Just this week, a shelter-in-place order was issued at Harvard University due to shots fired at the Harvard Square T station, causing quite a panic.
