Canton’s Big Plans: A Pedestrian Bridge, Senior Centre Renovation and More!

You heard it here first! The township of Canton has something exciting in store. They have just announced several key projects worth millions of dollars. These plans include a pedestrian bridge over the I-275 freeway, extensive updates to The Summit, and a meaningful lift for the Sheldon School. Turns out, state grants amounting to nearly $7million will cover these large undertakings.

The pedestrian bridge is an especially exciting improvement, slated to offer safer and more welcoming roadways. This is a big deal for those who aren’t behind the wheel but still need to get around. After all, we can’t ignore the folks who currently have to make their way across the tricky path along Palmer Road to get to various schools and activity centers.

On top of the pedestrian bridge, there’s a huge renovation planned for the Summit on the Park. For Club 55+, Canton’s senior program, this means moving from their current 1,500 square foot space to an area seven times larger! Seniors and community members will now have more room for activities such as billiards, shuffleboard, extra exercise classes, card games, cooking classes, and more.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Sheldon School is also due for a rehaul. With a $1million grant, the building will house Kids-TALK, a child welfare program. The focus of this center will be the safety, social and emotional health, and stability of kids and families throughout the area. Plus, it’s perfectly positioned for families living in western Wayne County and nearby Canton’s new Youth Center.

No better time than now, folks! Clearly, Canton aims to be an even better place for everyone to live, work, and play. Stay tuned for more deets as they start making these plans a reality.
