Canton Township Prepares for Upcoming Trustee Election

Canton Township is buzzing with excitement as voters gear up for the upcoming elections, where nine township trustee candidates are competing for the chance to secure one of four coveted seats. With absentee ballots beginning to roll out this week, it’s crunch time for candidates, residents, and all those involved in the voting process!

Meet the Candidates

The ballot features a mix of familiar faces and new contenders. Incumbent trustees, Kate Borninski, Sommer Foster, and Tania Ganguly, who all represent the Democratic Party, are running alongside newcomer Ammara Ansari, bringing enthusiasm and fresh ideas to the board. However, they won’t have an easy route, as they will be up against notable Republican challengers including John Anthony, Tyler Grable, Jeff Graunke, and Marko Kozina. Plus, we’ve got non-party candidate Tammy Haggerty, who is looking to make her mark as an Independent.

The four candidates who achieve the highest vote totals will each serve a four-year term, earning a monthly stipend of $1,150.41. With varying backgrounds and perspectives, the candidates have shared their motivations and visions for the township.

Candidates’ Perspectives

Ammara Ansari, at just 30 years old, has been actively engaging with the community in her role as the development director at Detroit Action. She mentions her time living in Canton over the last eight years has inspired her to become a voice for those who feel unheard. Her hope? To continue instilling positivity and progress within the community.

Longtime trustee Kate Borninski, 57, has dedicated over 24 years to Canton and has been actively involved in education and community service. Having brought substantial funding and initiatives to the township, she believes that her experience is vital for продолжing progress.

Sommer Foster, 47, who has held various leadership positions, is especially passionate about green spaces and public engagement. She believes in every resident’s right to contribute to decision-making processes.

Tania Ganguly’s background in engineering and finance pairs with her experience as a trustee, allowing her to advocate for sustainable development while ensuring inclusivity within all community programs.

On the Republican side, Tyler Grable, 29, emphasizes the importance of community safety and road improvements. He believes that focusing on the township’s welfare is essential.

Jeff Graunke, 66, touts his business acumen as a vital asset in aiding local ventures. He wants to foster a sense of community and create opportunities for local businesses to thrive.

Marko Kozina, having retired from the United States Border Patrol, believes that community engagement and supporting youth sports programs are key components for fostering community unity and wellness.

Independent candidate Tammy Haggerty brings a business perspective to the board, emphasizing the necessity of representing the business community and its interests.

Key Issues on the Horizon

As candidates compile their action plans, they have discussed pressing issues within Canton Township. Flooding due to climate change, infrastructure conditions, and economic development all remain top of mind for many candidates as they aim to elevate the township’s appeal and functionality.

Infrastructure improvements are a consistent theme, with many candidates emphasizing the urgent need to address road conditions, expanding connectivity, and finding ways to preserve beautiful green spaces for future generations.

In terms of economic development, candidates propose working in collaboration with local businesses, schools, and governmental agencies to bring about revitalization and sustainable growth. The candidates understand that nurturing a diverse array of businesses will bolster the local economy and improve residents’ quality of life.

Looking Towards the Future

Regardless of party affiliations or personal agendas, the core sentiment among the candidates is clear: they all share a deep commitment to enhancing Canton Township’s charm and community spirit. As voters begin to cast their ballots, the direction of Canton Township hangs in the balance, ready to embrace new possibilities for the next four years.

The upcoming election promises to be an exciting chapter for Canton, with both incumbents and newcomers bringing their A-game. It’s a wonderful opportunity for residents to engage with the candidates and shape the future of their community!
