Dearborn Heights Community Comes Together Amidst Heartbreaking Violence in Lebanon

Dearborn Heights, Mich. — In a time that should be filled with joy and celebration, family tragedy has cast a dark shadow over this close-knit community. City Council Chairman Mo Baydoun has expressed feelings of frustration and heartbreak as violence continues to plague Lebanon, claiming the lives of his loved ones. This week, the situation escalated dramatically due to ongoing Israeli airstrikes in the region.

The Heart-wrenching Reality

Baysoun was devastated to discover that his 40-year-old cousin, Batoul Dabaja-Saad, had been killed during an airstrike that struck their family home in South Lebanon. They were celebrating her son, Mohamed Hassan Saad‘s birthday when the unimaginable happened. “All of them were found dead,” Baydoun said, sounding visibly distraught. The numbers tell a tragic story, with over 500 people losing their lives since the beginning of the airstrikes on Monday.

“What happened to Batoul has happened to 500 other beautiful families and we can no longer be statistics anymore. These are civilians — these are humans,” Baydoun lamented. His anguish is echoed by other residents of Dearborn Heights, who are grappling with the same helplessness as they hear news of continued airstrikes.

Supporting Each Other Through Grief

Baydoun is not alone with this burden. He finds solace in sharing his grief with fellow Dearborn Heights resident Ali Dabaja, who is also a cousin of the family that lost everything in the devastating airstrike. Dabaja recalls Batoul as someone who was completely selfless, noting that she chose to stay in the region for a few extra days “just to help cope with the disaster of all those injured.”

“She was highly educated — a master’s degree, a clinical instructor — and her entire family was completely erased,” Dabaja poignantly shared. These words reveal the depth of loss felt by many as they come to terms with the reality of the ongoing conflict.

A Rising Conflict

The situation in Lebanon has seen a significant intensification, with tensions between Hezbollah and Israeli forces escalating towards what might become an all-out war. Just this week, Hezbollah fired dozens of rockets into Israel. In response, the Pentagon has announced it will be sending additional forces to the region, citing the need for stability and safety.

As if this were not overwhelming enough, the tight-knit community in Dearborn Heights is left with growing concerns for their family members trapped in the conflict. As Baydoun and Dabaja expressed, the prevailing sentiment among the residents is a call for peace. “I think enough is enough,” Dabaja stated with a heavy heart.

Coming Together for Lebanon

In light of the ongoing tragedy, the community is taking action. A rally called “United for Lebanon” is planned for Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Henry Ford Centennial Library in Dearborn. This event will serve as a gathering where residents can come together, share their grief, and prayerfully advocate for peace. This initiative highlights both the hope and strength that the people of Dearborn Heights cling to amidst chaos.

As the airstrikes continue and news of further destruction emerges, the community remains steadfast, supporting one another and holding onto hope that peace will return to Lebanon, allowing families to reunite without fear.
