Sponsor Our ArticlesThis past weekend, the heart of Detroit pulsed with pride as the community gathered to pay tribute to our brave veterans during a series of heartfelt events leading up to Veterans Day. The Jewish War Veterans (JWV) Department of Michigan, alongside the community, stepped up to honor those who have given so much for our country.
On Saturday, November 9, Congregation Shaarey Zedek (CSZ) hosted its annual Veterans Shabbat service. Now in its 17th year, the event brought together a robust gathering of JWV members, family, and friends. And what a grand ceremony it was! The Southfield Police Department’s Color Guard led the processional, filling the sanctuary with a sense of unity and respect as the congregation waved small American flags to the backdrop of patriotic music.
The JWV members donned their traditional uniforms: blue blazers, white shirts, red ties, and their iconic post hats, proudly displaying their commitment to service. With a big smile, a volunteer pinned boutonnières on our lapels, greeting each of us with a warm “thank you for your service.” As a proud patron of the JWV, I had to chuckle when I reminded him that my only “service” was being a crossing guard back in sixth grade!
Bill Glogower, Senior Vice Commander of JWV and retired U.S. Air Force Sergeant, opened the program by announcing the posting of colors. He underscored the teamwork involved in making the Veterans Shabbat a success over the years. Donald Wagner, JWV Judge Advocate and retired Army Captain, expressed gratitude towards everyone who has supported the event, particularly highlighting member Linda Cohen’s vision that brought it all together.
Retired Brigadier General Don Schenk took a moment to recognize the countless individuals who support our veterans, from medical professionals to families cheering them on. His passion for honoring these unsung heroes set a touching tone for the day.
The highlight of the evening was Major General Scott Hiipakka, who serves as the Commanding General of the 46th Military Police Command of the Michigan Army National Guard. His service is noteworthy, having previously overseen Joint Task Force Guantanamo. Not only did he share experiences from his military career, but he also conveyed the profound impact of recent events in Israel, emphasizing hope amid tragedy—an inspiring reminder of resilience.
Hiipakka pointed out the Jewish community’s legacy of service, tracing roots back to the Revolutionary War. “Together we stand. Together we serve,” he said, and the sentiment resonated deeply among all present. The service concluded with the spirited Armed Forces Medley, where I had the honor of waving the flags representing each military branch—definitely a “feather in my cap!”
The next day, many JWV members braved less-than-ideal weather to participate in the Detroit Veterans Day Parade. Fox 2’s Chief Meteorologist Rich Luterman, a proud veteran himself, emceed the opening ceremonies, celebrating those who serve. Despite the rain, the spirit of gratitude, camaraderie, and pride was unmistakable.
On Monday, November 11, residents at Hechtman Apartments celebrated Veterans Day with a gathering featuring Drs. Ed Adler and Michael Steinberg, who shared stories and photos from their military experiences. The atmosphere was full of excitement, nostalgia, and yummy patriotic refreshments, alongside a spirited performance of military and USO songs by talented singer Vanessa Carr.
The Jewish War Veterans stands strong as America’s oldest veteran service organization, and it needs your support now more than ever. Whether you are a veteran or a community member wishing to make a difference, there’s always room to get involved! Reach out to the JWV to stay connected and continue the legacy of service.
Let’s remember to keep the spirit of Veterans Day alive every day of the year! Together as a community, we can honor the sacrifices made by our veterans and ensure their stories are celebrated for generations to come.
