Detroit Troubles: 17-Year-Old to be Tried as Adult for Murder

Detroit. Tough times keep rolling in as a 17-year-old from Oakland county finds himself facing adult charges in a murder case. This young man, Brandon Butler, is set to be tried for the unfortunate death of a 23-year-old girl.

Let’s take you back to the unsettling afternoon of July 13, 2024. In Detroit’s Hawthorne Park neighborhood, first responders were called to the intersection of Cardoni and Robinwood streets just before 5 p.m. Unfortunately, what they found was nothing close to pleasing.

Tavita Hunter, a 23-year-old Detroit resident, was found lying lifelessly in the grass–she’d been shot in the back. Despite the best first aid efforts, she was declared dead at the scene.

The accused, Brandon Butler, allegedly had a conflict with Hunter, which seems to have spiraled out of control. Authorities report that he shot the young woman with a handgun and fled.

As of now, Butler has been slapped with two severe charges– first-degree murder and a felony firearm violation. But it’s worth mentioning that this isn’t going to be a juvenile case. The boy, who is from Farmington Hills, will be tried as an adult.

With the arraignment scheduled for 2:30 p.m. coming Thursday, at the 36th District Court, it’s clear that the law is not taking this matter lightly. Let this be a somber reminder to us all of how devastating the consequences of impulsive decisions can be.
