Just a little while ago, Heartland Alliance Health was planning to close its services, with clinics set to shut down by February 26 and food pantries by February 22. Imagine the impact that would have had on the community! More than 8,000 people depend on these services every day, making it a crucial part of many lives.
There was even a notable worry among over 100 employees who had been told their last working day would be by February 28. But wait! After feedback from local officials and organizations rained down in support, Heartland Alliance Health decided to ditch those closure plans entirely. And doesn’t that just put a smile on your face?
Heartland Alliance Health operates two clinics, with one located at 5501 S. Halsted St. and another at 4009 N. Broadway. These clinics provide essential health services primarily to low-income individuals and those experiencing homelessness. And let’s not forget the special services tailored specifically for HIV-positive individuals through their food pantries. It’s all about community and care here!

Well, Cook County Commissioner Stanley Moore stepped in and helped connect Heartland Alliance Health with OneHealth, who graciously provided the substantial grant—exactly what they needed to keep running! The chairperson of the Heartland Alliance Union expressed sincere gratitude for the grant. As a bonus, all layoff notices have been rescinded.
