This project, part of the I-696 Restore the Reuther initiative, cost $275 million and aimed to upgrade existing infrastructure while providing job opportunities. While the main lanes are now open, further work is planned for 2025 to enhance pavement and landscape. Motorists can expect smoother commutes and reduced traffic disruptions moving forward.
Great news for everyone who travels on the busy I-696 in Oakland County! Just recently, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced that all east and westbound lanes of I-696, particularly between Interstate 275 and Lahser Road, are now open again for motorists. This announcement comes as a sigh of relief for approximately 160,000 drivers who use this critical stretch of highway every single day.
The lanes were shut down as part of the extensive I-696 Restore the Reuther project, which is a four-year initiative that carries a hefty price tag of $275 million. This ambitious construction project has been all about upgrading and rebuilding this well-traveled interstate. Decision-makers had to shift traffic to manage the challenges while focusing on rebuilding the westbound side of I-696, addressing many issues drivers were facing.
The work done in this project wasn’t just about reopening the lanes. Crews spent tireless hours working on storm sewer replacements and ramp reconstructions at key locations like Orchard Lake Road, American Drive, Franklin Road, and Telegraph Road. If you’ve ever driven down that stretch before the construction, you’re probably all too familiar with the pesky potholes that had plagued the westbound side, which was nearing the end of its lifespan.
The work officially began in 2023 and has involved significant efforts to ensure that I-696 meets the needs and safety of all drivers. While it might feel like a journey has been undertaken to get where we are now, there’s still more to come! Additional construction is planned for 2025, focusing on the stretch of I-696 from Lahser Road to Interstate 75, which is anticipated to last about three years.
As we look ahead, crews are expected to return in the spring or summer of 2025 to complete the remaining work, which includes pavement markings and enhancing the landscapes of the area. For now, while it’s fantastic that the main lanes are open again, orange barrels may still be seen on the shoulders of I-696 as final touches are completed until 2024.
This major construction project has a silver lining beyond just improved road conditions. It is estimated that the Restore the Reuther project could support roughly 3,329 jobs, both directly and indirectly, which is excellent news for local employment. Projects of this scale are not just about improving infrastructure; they create opportunities and boost the economy as well.
For those looking to stay updated about the upcoming construction in 2025, MDOT has committed to sharing more information in early 2025. So, keep your eyes peeled for updates as we navigate this new chapter in the ongoing development of I-696.
With the reopening of I-696, daily commutes are set to get back to normal for many in Oakland County. No more detours or traffic jams—just your smooth drive along a freshly built roadway! As the local community embraces these updates, motorists can breathe a little easier knowing the state is taking measures to enhance their driving experience with robust infrastructure.
