St. Louis has become a little brighter this weekend as Isaac Howard, the talented junior forward from Michigan State University, has snagged the prestigious 2025 Hobey Baker Award, recognizing him as college hockey’s top player. The award was presented during the exciting Frozen Four championship event, where the hockey world came together to celebrate the achievements of its best and brightest.
Howard had an absolutely incredible season, finishing with a remarkable 26 goals and 26 assists in just 37 games. This impressive tally gives him a total of 52 points, placing him at the top of the nation with an average of 1.41 points per game. It’s no wonder he was also named the Big Ten Player of the Year, dominating his competition and helping to propel Michigan State to grand sports victories.
His outstanding performance played a key role in helping the Spartans claim back-to-back Big Ten regular season and tournament titles. While Michigan State had high hopes as a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, they faced a tough challenge and were ultimately eliminated by Cornell in the regional semifinal. Nevertheless, Howard’s skill and determination on the ice are qualities that will surely echo in the history of Michigan State hockey.
This achievement makes Howard just the third player from Michigan State to win the famed Hobey Baker Award, following in the footsteps of legendary players Kip Miller (1990) and Ryan Miller (2001). It’s a remarkable honor that underscores just how far Howard has come, especially considering his past health struggles. Remarkably, he underwent heart surgery to treat a life-threatening defect before even arriving at Michigan State, yet that did not stop him from showcasing his talents on the ice.
Looking ahead, Howard’s two previous linemates, Daniel Russell and Charlie Stramel, are confirmed to return next season, promising fans more thrilling hockey action. Alongside Howard, who is determined to bring a national championship to Michigan State next year, teamwork and collaboration will be crucial.
