Survived by his wife Joyce and family, John was known for his passions in travel, photography, and social connections. A celebration of his life is planned for this summer, where family and friends will share stories of the remarkable man he was.
It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of a beloved community member, John Palmer Williams, who left this world on January 22, 2025, while in the comfort of his home surrounded by his cherished family. Born on May 22, 1939, John’s remarkable journey spanned more than eight decades filled with personal and professional achievements that touched many lives.
John was not just a respected attorney; he was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Andrews Williams, who was his partner in life, as well as their son John “Jay” Williams. John’s family extends to his sister Carolyn McGath and brother-in-law Jim McGath, along with his son-in-law Jonathan Roy. His legacy continues with his granddaughter Allison Roy Thomas, grandson-in-law Daniel Thomas, and adorable great-grandchildren, Camryn and Kai. He was pre-deceased by his daughter Jennifer Williams Roy, whose memory lived on in the hearts of those who knew them.
John’s story began in Ashland, NE, where he grew up as the son of Dr. Martin and Florence Williams. Academics were clearly in his DNA as he graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1961. His journey continued in the hallowed halls of the University of Michigan Law School, where he not only honed his legal skills but also met Joyce, the love of his life.
From 1965 until 1996, John practiced law at the reputable firm Butzel Long in Grosse Pointe Park, MI, earning the respect of peers and clients alike with his dedication and integrity.
While John was committed to his profession, his heart was especially full when he traveled with his family. He had a zest for adventure and found great joy in exploring the beautiful landscapes of the world, particularly through exciting African safaris! This passion didn’t stop there; John was also an enthusiastic photographer, capturing stunning images that allowed him to relive those incredible moments for years to come.
In his retirement, John cherished the memories made at the Andrews family cottage located at Mullett Lake, MI. Summers spent at the cottage were a true highlight for him, filled with laughter, family gatherings, and sun-soaked days. It became a sanctuary where joy and relaxation went hand in hand.
In his later years, John made a cozy home for himself at Fox Run in Novi, MI. There, he engaged in a number of social activities including card games and bingo, where he enjoyed connecting with friends and fellow residents. His warm personality and sense of humor made him a favorite among many.
As his family focuses on healing, they are planning a quiet celebration of John’s life at the family cottage this summer. This gathering will be a time for them to share stories, reminisce about joyful moments, and celebrate the remarkable man that John was.
John Palmer Williams will be dearly missed but never forgotten. His family, friends, and community are left with a treasure trove of memories and a legacy that will endure for generations to come.
