Johnson City Mourns the Loss of Robert W. Trudeau
Residents of Johnson City, Tennessee are coming together to remember and celebrate the life of a cherished community member, Robert W. Trudeau, who passed away on January 5, 2025, at the age of 83. This loving family man and accomplished business leader left behind a legacy of hard work and dedication.
A Life Well-Lived
Robert was born on November 13, 1941, in the small town of Ironwood, Michigan. Growing up in a unique household, he was surrounded by the unconditional love of his parents, Archie and Lempi (Enkkeli), both of whom were deaf. Being the youngest of three brothers, Robert quickly learned sign language, enabling him to communicate with his parents from an early age.
However, life took a challenging turn when Robert’s father passed away when he was just nine years old. This left the family facing financial struggles, something that shaped Robert’s determination and work ethic from a young age. He graduated from Ironwood High School in 1959 and took a significant step forward by enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he served in Germany from 1960 to 1961.
Academic and Professional Achievements
After his military service, Robert returned to pursue higher education. He graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) from Northland College in 1965 and earned his MBA from Michigan State University in 1966. During his college years, he married his first love, Anna Tapio Slade, a fellow Ironwood native. Together, they welcomed two children, Todd in 1963 and Laurie in 1968, continuing the Trudeau legacy of love and support.
Robert started his career in sales and marketing within the industrial sector, working for well-known companies such as General Electric, Ansul, and A.O. Smith. In 1974, he took a leap of faith, transitioning to the role of Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Detroit and Northern Savings and Loan in Hancock, Michigan. Robert’s career took another turn in 1981 when he relocated to Illinois, and in 1985, he married Betty Jaenicke, expanding his family further.
Leadership and Legacy
As Robert climbed the corporate ladder, he advanced to notable leadership roles, including Vice President at A.O. Smith Water Products Division and President of Robert Shaw Controls. His final role was as President of American Water Heater Co. in Johnson City, Tennessee. Renowned for his exceptional negotiation skills and strategic insights, Robert was greatly respected in industrial circles.
A Man of Interests
Beyond his impressive career, Robert had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He enjoyed activities such as hunting, fishing, and motorcycling, but running and hiking were his true passions. After retiring, Robert and Betty split their time between Johnson City and Largo, Florida, where they continued to embrace life to the fullest.
Family and Community Bonds
In his passing, Robert leaves behind his beloved wife, Betty, along with two children, Todd Trudeau and Laurie Contratto. His family also includes three stepchildren, three grandchildren, and numerous step-grandchildren and great step-grandchildren. Robert’s siblings, Walter and Alvin Trudeau, along with many nieces and nephews, will also cherish his memory.
