Kalamazoo Welcomes New Emergency Veterinary Care Center in Oshtemo Township

A new emergency veterinary care facility, named Emergency Veterinary Care Centers (EVCC), has opened its doors in Oshtemo Township, Kalamazoo County, aiming to provide critical support for pets in the area. The clinic, located at 6289 W. Main Street, officially commenced operations on June 20, 2025.

This new addition to the EVCC network is the company’s fifth location overall and its second in Michigan, with an existing center located in Holland. Initially, the Oshtemo Township clinic will operate during the weekends, from 7 p.m. Fridays until 7:30 a.m. Mondays. Plans are in place to transition to 24/7 operation as soon as possible, expanding the range of services available to pet owners in need of urgent medical care for their pets.

Facility Details and Services

The new veterinary center spans 4,566 square feet and offers a variety of critical services including emergency care, surgery, in-house diagnostics, X-rays, urgent surgeries, 24-hour hospitalization, laser therapy, and humane euthanasia. However, it is important to note that the clinic will not provide basic care services such as routine visits or vaccinations.

The veterinary care center has implemented an online check-in system that permits pet owners to register their pets from home, allowing them to wait until they are notified for their turn. The clinic is emphasizing the need for immediate action from pet owners in cases where their pets are in distress or require urgent medical attention.

Community Impact and Management

Chad Martin, vice president of operations at EVCC, has expressed optimism about being able to serve the Kalamazoo community with vital emergency veterinary care. He is joined in leadership by Dr. JoDell Walker, who will serve as the medical director of the facility. Tessa Gumpert, the clinic manager, highlighted the importance of accessible emergency care for pet owners, especially during high-stress situations.

The clinic aims to foster strong partnerships with local veterinarians to ensure continuity of care for pets that may need ongoing medical attention after an emergency visit.

Background on EVCC

EVCC originated as a nights-and-weekend clinic that was established in 2003 in Westville, Indiana. The evolution to a 24/7 emergency veterinary service occurred in 2011, followed by continuous growth and expansion over the subsequent years. This strategic move responds to the increasing need for round-the-clock veterinary care, a trend that has become significantly important for pet owners.

The new clinic is housed within the recently built $4 million Hamptons Plaza, which features additional tenants focused on health and wellness, highlighting a commitment to the overall well-being of the community.

Pet owners seeking more information can visit EVCC’s official website at evcc.com/kalamazoo or contact the center directly at 269-548-0400.
