Howell, Michigan – Mary Lou Morris, a beloved figure in the Howell community, passed away on August 9, 2025, at the age of 91. Morris was known for her deep commitment to family and the legacy she built throughout her lifetime. Born on February 4, 1934, in Highland Park, Michigan, she was the youngest of eight siblings, all of whom have since passed away. Mary Lou’s family life was of utmost importance to her, as emphasized by her long-lasting marriage to husband Jack Morris, who predeceased her on January 1, 2016.
Morris’s journey began at the age of 15 when she met Jack, who was an orphan and would often join her family for dinner. Their strong bond led them to marry on April 20, 1951, when Mary Lou was just 17 and Jack was 18. The couple faced the trials of life together from the very beginning, including Jack’s service in the army during the Korean War in 1952. During this time, Mary Lou gave birth to their son, Jack Jr., while supporting her sister, Bernice, and juggling full-time work.
Building a Life Together
While Jack was stationed abroad, Mary Lou demonstrated remarkable strength and independence by purchasing and helping to build their first home in Novi, Michigan. After Jack’s heart attack at age 33, they sought a change in lifestyle and moved to Trout Creek, Michigan, located in the scenic Upper Peninsula. In Trout Creek, they did not just buy a small store but also embarked on a new adventure by building a home and renting cabins and boats for the UPPCO-owned campgrounds.
The couple actively contributed to enhancing their community by establishing cross-country ski trails during the winter months. After two decades in Trout Creek, they retired and constructed a home in Chassell, Michigan, where they cultivated a flourishing garden filled with memories of their life together. Following Jack’s illness, they moved back downstate for better proximity to family in Howell.
