News Summary

Mercedes-Benz is transferring about 500 corporate and technical roles to Atlanta over an 18-month period as part of its strategy to establish a North American headquarters. This includes moving 400 jobs from Michigan and will be accompanied by significant investment in a new research and development hub. The consolidation aims to enhance agility and customer experience, with employees having the opportunity to transfer rather than face layoffs. The decision aligns with the growth of the auto industry in Georgia, joining investments from other major automakers.

Atlanta – Mercedes-Benz is relocating approximately 500 corporate and technical jobs to the Atlanta area over the next 18 months as part of its strategy to establish Atlanta as its North American headquarters. This move was announced on May 22, 2023, and will include the transfer of 400 jobs from its current facility in Michigan, alongside a multimillion-dollar investment to create a state-of-the-art research and development hub in Atlanta.

As part of this transition, Mercedes-Benz will be closing its Financial Services headquarters located in Farmington Hills, Michigan. Currently, the company maintains around 180 roles in Michigan, and this number could grow to 200 technical roles before the consolidation is completed by August 2026. The company has assured that the jobs leaving Michigan are not layoffs; affected employees will have the opportunity to transfer to the new headquarters in Atlanta.

The Farmington Hills facility, which was a recently opened state-of-the-art building, supported about 700 employees as of 2022 and featured various amenities including workspaces, a fitness center, and a restaurant. In light of the consolidation, a corporate real estate team will work on finding a new tenant for the Farmington Hills property.

Mercedes-Benz USA, which is responsible for distribution, marketing, and customer service for all Mercedes-Benz products in the U.S., currently employs about 800 people at its Atlanta headquarters, which was opened in 2018. The CEO of the company indicated that this consolidation aims to enhance agility within the organization and improve overall customer experience.

Discussions about the potential relocation have been ongoing since fall 2022, largely due to reduced occupancy rates in offices post-COVID-19. The precise location and specifications of the new research and development hub are still under evaluation, with further announcements expected in due course.

This decision reflects Mercedes-Benz’s broader strategy to enhance product quality and customer engagement while aligning with the expanding auto industry in Georgia. The company’s expansion coincides with similar investments made by other automakers in the state, including notable facilities established by Porsche, Kia, and Hyundai.

The company is also likely to benefit from established incentive packages offered by state and local governments in Georgia, which have previously provided financial incentives to encourage the relocation of corporate operations. Mercedes-Benz expects to complete its consolidation process smoothly by the designated timeline in August 2026.
