Wilson Jr. Centennial Park. These projects, along with new developments like the Hudson’s Detroit project and the Henry Ford Health hospital tower, promise to reshape the city’s landscape and enhance community connectivity. With a focus on parks, public spaces, and thoroughfares, these transformations highlight Metro Detroit’s commitment to urban renewal and improved quality of life for residents.
As we dive into 2025, Metro Detroit is buzzing with excitement over several major construction projects that are slowly but surely transforming the landscape of the city. From bridges to parks, here’s a friendly peek into what’s happening in the region that you won’t want to miss!
For those looking forward to traveling between the U.S. and Canada, the Gordie Howe International Bridge is set to open to vehicle traffic come fall 2025! This ambitious project has reached numerous construction milestones in 2024, including the essential connection of the bridge deck. Right now, the crew is hard at work on electrical and drainage systems, fire suppression measures, as well as the all-important lighting systems.
On the Canadian side, the Port of Entry is seeing the development of 11 structures, complete with inspection lanes and toll booths. Meanwhile, the U.S. Port of Entry isn’t to be outdone, with 13 structures and a whopping 36 primary inspection lanes underway. Safety is a top priority, and you can expect barriers to keep vehicle traffic separate from the multi-use path, along with security features like fencing, cameras, and emergency call boxes.
In a unique twist, one of the final touches will include a cozy nesting box for peregrine falcons, set to be installed in 2025. Nature lovers are sure to appreciate this thoughtful addition!
Also opening in the fall of 2025 is the eagerly anticipated Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Centennial Park! Thanks to a newly established $35 million fund aimed at supporting contractors and revitalizing local fundraising efforts, the park is coming to life. Spanning 22 acres, this beautiful park will feature the delightful Delta Dental Play Garden, a spacious program lawn, a soothing water garden, and a sports house complete with basketball courts. What a fantastic way to connect the east and west riverfronts of the Detroit River!
Many more projects are stirring up excitement in Metro Detroit! The Hudson’s Detroit project has officially topped out and is set to welcome tenants by the end of 2025. The old Joe Louis Arena site is making way for a J.W. Marriott, and a new phase of I-696 reconstruction is timed to kick off in 2025. Expect a two-year detour for eastbound traffic as work progresses on this vital highway.
Things are also buzzing at the University of Michigan, where construction has begun on a $250 million Center for Innovation in downtown Detroit, slated for completion by spring 2027. And if you’re a fan of mixed-use spaces, you’ll be thrilled to know that The Mid Project, which includes a swanky Thompson Hotel, is kicking off construction early in January 2025!
Over at Cadillac Square, Bedrock LLC is prepping to redevelop the site, bringing a 65,000-square-foot entertainment venue and multi-level food hall into the picture. Meanwhile, the construction of a new 20-story Henry Ford Health hospital tower is part of a massive $2.2 billion redevelopment project, with the grand opening aimed for 2029. What’s more, the former Kmart headquarters in Troy is also set to undergo a mixed-use transformation starting in summer 2025.
As we look ahead, the community spirit in Metro Detroit is vibrant. With the local economy gaining traction, there’s much to be excited about. From the bridges to the parks and buzzing redevelopment, Metro Detroit is indeed on a fantastic journey toward a brighter future.
