It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of John Palmer Williams, a longtime Michigan lawyer, who peacefully left this world at his home on January 22, 2025. He was surrounded by his loving family during his final moments, which provided him comfort and warmth.
John is deeply missed by his devoted wife, Joyce Andrews Williams, who stood by his side throughout their remarkable journey together. His son, John “Jay” Williams, along with numerous family members, including his sister Carolyn McGath, brother-in-law Jim McGath, and son-in-law Jonathan Roy, are left with cherished memories of this incredible man. Born to Dr. Martin and Florence Williams in Ashland, Nebraska, John grew up with a spirited love for life. A proud Nebraska Cornhusker, he graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1961. Seeking to make his mark in the world of law, he attended the University of Michigan, where he not only found his passion for legal matters but also met his future wife, Joyce.
John dedicated a significant portion of his life to practicing law at the renowned firm Butzel Long in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan, from 1965 until 1996. His dedication to his profession was evident, and he built a successful career that significantly impacted his community. After hanging up his legal hat, John embarked on explorations around the globe, immersing himself in the cultures and wonders of different countries. Among his adventures, he developed a particular fondness for African safaris, gaining a wealth of stories and experiences that he adored sharing with loved ones.
John also cherished summers spent at the Andrews family cottage on Mullett Lake in Michigan, where fond family memories were created. In his later years, John made his home at Fox Run in Novi, Michigan. There, he became an active and cherished member of the community, enjoying classic games like cards and bingo with fellow residents, striking up conversations, and forming new friendships.
In a tribute befitting a man who brought joy and wisdom to all he met, a quiet celebration of John’s life is planned for family and close friends at the beloved cottage this coming summer.
