Novi, Michigan — A tragic shooting incident occurred in the parking lot of the Michigan State Fair on September 1, 2024, resulting in the death of one 14-year-old boy and leaving another injured. The victims, both from Detroit, were identified as Darean Davis, who succumbed to his injuries, and another teen who is currently in stable condition.

The shooting prompted a swift response from multiple law enforcement agencies, initially reported as an active shooter situation. Authorities believe the incident stemmed from an ongoing argument between the teens that had reportedly continued throughout the week. Although thorough investigations are underway, no suspects have been identified at this time.

The Michigan State Fair, which is set to take place from August 28 to September 1, 2025 in Novi, has a long history dating back to the 19th century. Once held in Detroit from 1905 until 2009, the fair faced discontinuation due to budgetary issues but was relocated to Novi in 2012. The fair showcases Michigan’s rich agricultural industry, with events ranging from farmers markets to livestock competitions.

This year, fair activities include baking contests, carnival rides, fitness programs, live music, and a craft beer festival. General admission will be priced at $10, with free entry for children 2 years and younger. For an enhanced experience, an ultimate admission ticket, granting unlimited access to carnival rides and special BMX/FMX shows, costs $42. Additionally, tickets for the Friday Night Flights craft beer festival are available at $20, offering ten drink tickets for guests aged 21 and older. However, all minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian while visiting the fair.

Following the unfortunate shooting incident, fair organizers have expressed their sorrow over the loss of life and emphasized their commitment to ensuring guest safety. Enhanced security measures are already in place, including weapons detection systems and an increased police presence throughout the venue. In response to the incident, the fair is adjusting its operating hours, with the box office and entry closing at 6 p.m. and the fairgrounds at 7 p.m. on Sundays and Mondays. Furthermore, entry policies are being revised to require anyone under the age of 18 to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Local officials, including State Representatives Kelly Breen and Debbie Dingell, have expressed their condolences and condemned the violence surrounding the incident. The fair, a cherished annual tradition in Michigan, aims to foster a sense of community and celebration of local culture and agriculture amidst the ongoing investigation into this concerning event.

As the fair approaches, attendees are reminded to be vigilant and adhere to all safety protocols in place to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience for everyone.
