The 2026 recruit has garnered attention with an impressive rating, ranking as the No. 60 athlete nationwide. With the summer recruiting season approaching, the Spartans aim to strengthen their roster amidst recent recruitment challenges.
Novi, Mich. — Michigan State football has officially offered an athletic scholarship to Samson Gash, a local prospect from Novi, Michigan, as the summer recruiting season approaches. Gash, who announced the offer on his social media platform X, is recognized as a three-star recruit in the highly competitive 2026 class.
Currently a student-athlete at Detroit Catholic Central, Gash has garnered attention with a recruiting rating of 87 on 247Sports. He is ranked as the No. 60 athlete nationwide in the 2026 class, and as the No. 16 player from Michigan. His impressive statistics and performance have made him a target for over ten college programs, including notable institutions like Michigan State, Illinois, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Wake Forest, and others.
As the recruiting landscape heats up, Gash is scheduled to take an official visit to Cincinnati next month, while Michigan State is in the process of arranging an official visit with him as well. This summer recruiting period, which officially kicks off on May 30th, is critical for college programs looking to build their rosters for the upcoming years.
Michigan State’s head coach Jonathan Smith is focusing on assembling a strong recruiting class for 2026 in the face of recent challenges in recruiting. The coaching staff is anticipating a busy month, as summer visits tend to be the peak period for recruits making campus appearances and assessing their options. The Spartans aim to enhance their offensive line, having already secured commitment from offensive lineman Eli Bickel for the 2026 class, while seeking to add two or three more players in that position.
One of Michigan State’s top priorities is a 6’5″, 305-pound tackle from Detroit Cass Tech, who is set to visit on June 13. Additional prospects include a player from Hawaii named Keli, visiting starting May 30, and James Williams Jr. from Indianapolis, scheduled for a visit on June 20. Despite these efforts, Michigan State has faced setbacks, having lost two significant commitments for the 2026 class with Gregory Patrick opting for Notre Dame and Jacob Savage choosing Indiana. Savage, who was previously ranked as the No. 9 recruit in Kentucky and No. 82 linebacker nationally by 247Sports, was a highly sought-after player.
As it stands, Michigan State has only four commitments for the 2026 class, with none hailing from the defensive side of the ball. The Spartans’ challenges in recruiting are compounded by a lack of recent success on the field, as they last participated in a bowl game in 2021. Current rivals, such as Michigan and Ohio State, have dominated the spotlight by winning the last two national championships, thereby complicating the Spartans’ recruitment efforts. There is optimism that an uptick in performance on the field could translate into improved recruiting outcomes in the future.
With the summer recruiting season just around the corner, Michigan State is taking proactive steps to build a competitive team while trying to make a strong impression on young athletes like Samson Gash.
