East Lansing was buzzing with excitement on April 19, 2025, as the Michigan State men’s tennis team pulled off a jaw-dropping victory over their fierce rivals, the No. 25 Michigan Wolverines. The Spartans clinched a 4-2 victory at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center, marking a spectacular end to their regular season and quenching a thirst for victory that had lasted over 23 matches!
It’s been a long road for the Spartans in their tennis rivalry with the Wolverines, stretching back to the 2002-03 season for their last win against Michigan. But on this momentous day, history was made! With their victory, MSU improved their record to an impressive 10-3 in the Big Ten Conference and 15-8 overall. Meanwhile, Michigan’s record slipped to 8-5 in the Big Ten, also sitting at 15-8 overall.
The match held even more significance as two seniors, Max Sheldon and Josh Portnoy, were celebrated for their contributions to the team. Their hard work and dedication were clearly evident throughout the match, inspiring their teammates to fight hard for a momentous victory.
The energy was palpable as the match kicked off with doubles play. The Spartans got off to a fantastic start when Max and Mitchell Sheldon took the court at No. 3 doubles, dominating their match against Michigan’s Alex Cairo and Nicholas Striglehner with a convincing 6-2. The momentum continued to build as Ozan Baris and Matthew Forbes stepped up at No. 1 doubles and clinched the doubles point for MSU after a hard-fought battle against Wolverines Will Cooksey and Patorn Hanchaikul, finishing with a score of 6-3.
When the singles matches began, the thrill of competition only intensified. Unfortunately, Vuk Radjenovic faced a tough opponent in Michigan’s Nicholas Striglehner, ultimately losing his match at No. 4 singles with a score of 6-2, 6-2. But the tide quickly turned with a win from freshman Mitchell Sheldon at No. 5 singles, who took on Mert Oral and came out on top with a triumphant 6-4, 6-2 scoreline.
Matthew Forbes also showcased his skills at No. 3 singles, defeating Patorn Hanchaikul decisively at 6-4, 6-2. However, Michigan’s Will Cooksey put up a strong challenge against Ozan Baris at No. 1 singles, edging out a win in a nail-biting contest ending at 7-5, 7-5.
As the match reached its climax, the outcome rested on the shoulders of Danial Rakhmatullayev, who faced Alex Cairo at No. 6 singles. Rakhmatullayev rose to the occasion and clinched the decisive victory for the Spartans with a tense win of 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. The excitement was palpable as MSU celebrated their historic win. Meanwhile, Max Sheldon’s match at No. 2 singles against Bjorn Swenson was left unfinished, with Sheldon leading at 6-2, 3-6, 4-1.
With this incredible achievement under their belts, the Spartans now turn their sights towards the 2025 Big Ten Championships, set to be held from April 25-28 in Columbus, Ohio.
