East Lansing Plans a Heartfelt Commemoration for the Second Anniversary of the MSU Mass Shooting

As the second anniversary of the tragic mass shooting at Michigan State University draws near, the community is gearing up for a solemn yet uplifting commemoration. This event, set for February 13, 2025, aims to honor the lives lost while also fostering healing and togetherness among students, staff, and faculty.

Big Plans for a Special Day

A dedicated committee made up of students, staff, and faculty members has been hard at work planning a meaningful day of remembrance and service. They have teamed up with the Office for Resource and Support Coordination to create an experience that not only remembers those we lost but also builds community and offers support. It’s a wonderful way to turn a difficult moment into an opportunity for connection and positivity.

On that day, most classes will be canceled, allowing everyone to take part in the activities planned throughout campus. The university will remain open to support its students and the community during this time of reflection and unity. Classes will restart on February 14, 2025, with no assignments or exams scheduled for that day, making it easier for students to participate in the memorial events.

A Day Full of Activities

The lineup for February 13 is packed with events aimed at supporting mental health and fostering community bonds. Here’s what to expect throughout the day:

  • 1-4 p.m.: Join service and advocacy opportunities at the Breslin Center Hall of History, where the focus will be on mental health initiatives and building community—plus, delicious food will be provided!
  • 1-9 p.m.: Head outdoors to supportive spaces under tents. These areas will be staffed by volunteers offering resources, luminary kits, bottled water, hot cocoa, and even comfort dogs to cuddle with.
  • 1-9 p.m.: If you prefer to stay indoors, the Breslin Center’s Hall of History and MSU Alumni Chapel will also host supportive spaces with similar offerings.
  • 8:10-8:25 p.m.: A beautiful moment awaits when the Beaumont Tower bells ring out, and buildings across campus will light up in green from 6 p.m. on February 13 until 6 a.m. on February 14.
  • A livestream of the commemoration will be available for those who can’t attend in person, accessible via the Spartans Together website.
  • 8 p.m.: The community is invited to light luminary kits and share photos on social media using the hashtag #spartanstogether.
  • Community art engagement activities will also allow everyone to contribute creatively to the day’s events.

Support Services Available

In recognition of the emotional weight of this day, Counseling & Psychiatric Services and the MSU Employee Assistance Program will be offering drop-in appointments from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on February 13, providing necessary support for anyone who may need it.

A Lasting Tribute

In addition to the day’s events, a memorial bench has been set up near Berkey Hall to honor the memories of those lost in the shooting. This bench is the result of an eight-month effort and stands as a testament to the university’s commitment to creating a lasting memorial on campus that honors the lives of Arielle Anderson, Brian Fraser, and Alexandria Verner.

Community members are encouraged to participate fully in this significant day. For more resources and support related to the commemoration, the community can visit SpartansTogether.msu.edu.

As the date approaches, let us wrap our arms around each other in love and support, transforming this day into a beacon of hope and unity for everyone on campus.
