Exciting Changes at Our Friends Place with New CEO Leading the Charge!

There’s some buzzworthy news in the nonprofit world! Our Friends Place (OFP), a heartfelt organization dedicated to supporting young women facing tough challenges like abuse, neglect, poverty, and homelessness, has welcomed a new leader at the helm. Helena L. Banks has officially stepped into the role of CEO as of September 2024, taking over the reins from the beloved Sue Thiers Hesseltine, who has retired after years of dedicated service.

Helping Young Women Find Their Footing

OFP has been a beacon of hope since its inception in 1987, thanks to its founder, Susybelle Gosslee. The organization has been changing lives by providing essential support, life skills training, and a safe place for young women to stay, all with the aim of helping them build brighter futures. With its Transitional Living Center (TLC) program, OFP currently serves women aged 18 to 24, offering two cozy apartment-style TLCs nestled in Old East Dallas. The first TLC opened its doors back in 1992, and the second followed in late 2015.

Every year, about 40 young women benefit from the TLCs, where they stay for an average of 219 days. During their stay, they take part in weekly lessons designed to equip them with essential life skills and receive intensive case management from dedicated staff who live on-site, ensuring personalized support every step of the way.

A Unique Approach to Empowerment

In addition to the TLC, OFP also runs the SOAR to Success program, which is a non-residential initiative that focuses on prevention and education. Participants can work closely with site coordinators throughout the school year, giving them the tools they need to thrive in life and avoid crisis situations in the future. To date, OFP has empowered thousands of women and girls, along with adult allies, helping them achieve self-sufficiency and independence.

Meet Helena L. Banks: A Passionate Advocate

Helena L. Banks brings a fresh perspective and a wealth of experience to her new role. Before becoming the CEO, she engaged with OFP as a volunteer and later served on the board for four years. With an extensive background in development and leadership at various organizations, including KERA and Planned Parenthood of North Texas, she is well-equipped for this important position. Helena graduated with a BA in Political Science from Sam Houston State University, where her leadership skills blossomed as the president of the Student Government Association.

Helena recently organized her first major fundraising event, a glamorous Gala and Casino Night in November, showcasing her commitment to supporting young women in crisis. She is enthusiastic about her new role and plans to prioritize the long-term sustainability and expansion of OFP’s programs and services.

Looking Towards the Future

As Helena settles into her new position, she’s already made it clear that innovation is on her mind. She hopes to enhance fundraising strategies, broaden public outreach, and fortify the organizational infrastructure, all with the goal of serving even more young women in the Dallas community. A shining example of OFP’s impact was recently highlighted when one program graduate showcased exceptional financial responsibility by exceeding savings account contribution requirements, proving that the training and support offered truly make a difference.

In conjunction with this leadership transition, OFP is gearing up for North Texas Giving Day, a fantastic opportunity for supporters to contribute to this noble cause. It’s safe to say that with Helena L. Banks leading the charge, great things are ahead for Our Friends Place. Everyone involved is looking forward to witnessing the organization’s continued growth and success in the years to come!
