The historic Michigan Central Station in Detroit will soon host a NoMad hotel, featuring around 180 rooms and 30 suites. Scheduled to open in the first half of 2027, this development will focus on art and culture, with local creations showcased. The station, reopened to the public in June 2024 after a major renovation, aims to establish a vibrant center for innovation and commerce. With amenities like a restaurant, bar, and wellness space, the NoMad hotel looks to serve both locals and tourists, enhancing the community’s cultural landscape.

Detroit – Michigan Central Station is set to become home to a NoMad hotel, featuring approximately 180 rooms, with an opening date scheduled for the first half of 2027. This development marks a significant milestone as it will occupy the previously unused floors 14 through 18 of the historic train station.

The NoMad hotel, part of Hilton’s luxury brand portfolio, will also offer a total of 30 suites on its uppermost floors. In addition to comfortable accommodations, the hotel will include amenities such as a restaurant, bar, lounge, and wellness space, all designed with an emphasis on art and culture, showcasing works by local Detroit creators.

The historic Michigan Central Station, which originally opened in 1913, has undergone a major transformation following its closure in 1988. The site reopened to the public in June 2024 after a six-year renovation spearheaded by Ford Motor Company, which acquired the station in 2018. This initiative aims to restore the station and turn it into a vibrant innovation hub and commercial space.

As part of this development, the hotel’s restaurant will be located in the historic carriage house area, where efforts will be made to reinvigorate and restore the space, including the reinstallation of its original clock face. The hotel is being marketed as “accessible luxury,” intended to serve both local residents and visiting tourists.

Bill Ford, the executive chair of Ford Motor Company, expressed hope that the hotel will serve as a gathering spot, enhancing the overall experience for guests and visitors to the station. The CEO of Michigan Central, Josh Sirefman, reported that there was considerable international interest in the hotel space, with 16 proposals evaluated before the selection of NoMad.

The NoMad brand has a strong reputation, with established locations in New York City and London and plans for expansion into Singapore. Since its inception in 2012, NoMad has aimed to create unique spaces that blend life and art, making its Detroit location a promising addition to its portfolio.

The Michigan Central area is part of a broader strategy to transform the station and surrounding vicinity into a thriving center for commerce and innovation. Since its reopening, the site has welcomed more than 300,000 visitors for various events and tours, illustrating its active role in the community and the interest in the station as a cultural and economic landmark.

The hotel’s creation and the redevelopment of the Michigan Central Station signal a renewed interest and investment in the historical site, promising to revive its legacy and reshape its future as a vibrant part of Detroit’s urban landscape.
