Altaii points out a particular demand for infant care, as many existing programs primarily cater to four-year-olds and do not offer adequate space for infants.

To tackle this issue, Altaii is advocating for city leaders to allow the renovation of an adjacent house to convert it into an infant care space, while also preparing to add another pre-K class at her center. The proposed ordinance changes, which are currently undergoing the approval process, have recently received unanimous support during their first reading. A second reading is scheduled for the following week, which will be a crucial step in the process.

If approved, the ordinance will impact 14 parcels of land and permit an increase in enrollment capacity from 50 to 75 children at both new or existing childcare centers in the area. Altaii’s dedication to this initiative has spanned almost a year as she navigates the lengthy processes associated with local government regulations.

Mayor Pro-Tem Laura Marie Casey has emphasized that this initiative represents a collaborative effort between a business responding to community needs and the city taking action to support those needs. This endeavor, while not a complete solution to the broader childcare shortage facing families, is viewed as significant progress in improving local childcare options.

A parent at Little Seeds, Lo Steele, expressed her experience, noting that she waited two years to enroll her daughter due to the challenges many families encounter in securing childcare. Other parents report facing waitlists of 8 to 9 months for their future children, indicating the pressing urgency of addressing this childcare crisis.
