A dedicated family man, veteran, and lover of nature, Mel leaves behind a legacy of love and commitment. As the community comes together to honor his life, we remember his contributions and the joy he brought to those around him.
On January 26, 2025, the vibrant city of Novi, Michigan, lost a truly remarkable individual, Melvin “Mel” Edward Liedel, at the age of 77. Surrounded by his loving family and cherished friends, Mel passed away, leaving a blanket of emotions across the community he adored.
Born on August 14, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan, Mel was the son of Melvin and Yvonne Liedel (Nadeau). His journey through life was beautifully marked by love, especially when he said “I do” to his beloved Margaret Consiglio on May 16, 1974. The couple recently celebrated an impressive 50 years of marriage, a milestone that showcased their dedication and unwavering commitment to one another.
In addition to being a devoted husband, Mel wore many hats, but perhaps his best title was that of a proud grandfather. He leaves behind three adoring children: Megan (Brian) Bachand, Marc (Terri) Liedel, and Matthew Liedel. His heart swells with joy at the thought of his two grandchildren, Alyssa and Collin, who brought endless happiness to his life. Mel is also survived by his siblings, Robert Louis Liedel and Denise Firoozi, along with a large extended family filled with nieces, nephews, and in-laws who will miss him dearly.
Mel was best known around town as a hardworking, dedicated family man. Beyond his family commitments, he was a passionate fan of the Detroit Lions football team, showing unwavering support through thick and thin. Weekends would often find him at the family cabin “up north”, where he could escape the hustle and bustle while cherishing the great outdoors. Mel had a deep love for music and outdoor activities, always seeking an opportunity to connect with nature and relish in the beauty of life.
Before taking on his role as a Facilities Manager at the Hayman Company—where he worked diligently until his retirement in 2014—Mel proudly served in the United States Army from 1967 to 1968. This commitment to service truly defined his character and illustrated his unwavering loyalty to his country.
As the community prepares to say their goodbyes, a visitation is scheduled for January 30, 2025, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Coats Funeral Home in Clarkston, Michigan. The following day, January 31, a funeral service will take place at Christ the Redeemer Church in Lake Orion. In-state viewing for the funeral will begin at 10:30 A.M., leading up to the mass at 11:00 A.M., followed by a heartfelt luncheon where friends and family can gather to celebrate Mel’s life.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to the Michigan Parkinson Foundation, honoring Mel’s memory while supporting a cause that touched the lives of many.
The obituary for Melvin “Mel” Edward Liedel was posted online on January 28, 2025, offering a glimpse into the extraordinary life he lived and the tremendous love he shared. His presence will be genuinely missed in the hearts of the family and community that adored him.
