News Summary

MidPen Housing has started construction on Oak Gardens, a supportive housing community for veterans in Menlo Park. Comprising 62 affordable apartments, with many reserved for those facing homelessness, Oak Gardens will offer essential services and easy access to VA programs. The development aims to foster a vibrant community with facilities and support aimed at enhancing the lives of veterans and their families.

New Housing Community for Veterans Begins Construction

Exciting times are ahead for veterans seeking affordable housing in the Menlo Park area! MidPen Housing has officially kicked off construction on a brand-new community called Oak Gardens. This initiative has been specifically designed to cater to the needs of veterans, offering them a much-needed supportive living environment.

A Special Spot for Veterans

Located on the grounds of the VA Palo Alto Health Care system campus, this development is truly significant. The land is owned by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and is being utilized under the VA’s Enhanced Use Lease Program. This unique program allows the VA to lease out underused land for important initiatives like supportive housing for our veterans.

What Oak Gardens Will Offer

Oak Gardens isn’t just any housing community; it’s a 100% supportive housing project that will feature a total of 62 apartments, including two units for property managers. The apartments are designed to be affordable for veterans and their families, with incomes ranging from 30 to 50 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI). Talk about a fantastic opportunity!

Of the total apartments, 55 will be specifically reserved for families experiencing homelessness, and six apartments will be set aside for households facing chronic homelessness. To further enhance affordability for residents, thirty-five HUD-VASH project-based vouchers will also be made available.

Amenities Inspired by Community

The dream of Oak Gardens includes not just shelters but a vibrant community atmosphere! Residents can look forward to beautifully landscaped outdoor areas, a multi-purpose community room for gatherings and activities, and a secure bicycle room for those who love to cycle. After all, creating a welcoming environment is key to building a sense of community.

Additional Support Services

Living in Oak Gardens means that veterans will have access to a range of supportive services provided by MidPen Services. These services will focus on critical areas such as economic mobility, education, and health, alongside personalized case management to help residents set and achieve their goals.

Easy Access to VA Services

One of the standout features of living at Oak Gardens is the convenient access to VA services and programs. This means that residents can benefit from the resources available on-site, all tailored to better support them as they transition into their new homes.

In the Heart of It All

Being in such a strategic location, Oak Gardens is just a stone’s throw away from community shopping centers, recreational spaces, and public transportation. Plus, those willing to venture into the city will find downtown San Francisco is only about 40 miles away, opening up a world of opportunities for exploration and adventure!

A Collaborative Effort

The funding for this exciting project comes from a blend of public and private sources, showcasing a community that truly cares. Support has rolled in from the City of Menlo Park, County of San Mateo, Housing Trust Silicon Valley, and the California Department of Housing and Community Development. This kind of collaboration emphasizes the community’s commitment to supporting our veterans and highlights how united efforts can make a significant difference.

Looking Forward

As MidPen Housing embarks on this project, Oak Gardens will mark the sixth community development in the area. It’s a reassuring sign of progress for veterans and their families, reflecting a growing understanding of their unique challenges and needs.

Incredible changes are underway, and with the construction at Oak Gardens, there’s a shining light on the horizon for many veterans who deserve quality housing and support!
