Oakland County Offers Holiday Cheer with $9.1 Million Medical Debt Relief for 14,000 Residents

Oakland County Offers Holiday Cheer with $9.1 Million Medical Debt Relief for 14,000 Residents

Oakland County Brings Holiday Cheer with Medical Debt Relief!

In a heartwarming twist just before the holidays, residents of Oak Park and surrounding areas are getting some good news that might add a little extra cheer to their celebrations. Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter and the Oakland County Board of Commissioners are thrilled to announce a significant achievement in their mission to wipe out medical debt for many of its residents.

A Holiday Gift Like No Other

This week, letters are being sent out to over 14,000 residents, letting them know that they have had a whopping $9.1 million in medical debt completely erased! These letters are expected to arrive just in time for the holiday weekend, bringing joy and relief to many families who have been struggling under the burden of unpaid medical bills.

More Relief on the Way

This endeavor is part of a larger initiative funded by Oakland County, with the goal of eliminating up to $200 million in medical debt affecting around 80,000 residents. The funding comes from a generous $2 million allocation via the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), proving that when it comes to helping the community, every bit counts. Teaming up with the national nonprofit Undue Medical Debt, the county aims to offer financial respite to those holding painful medical bills.

Why This Matters

Medical debt is a big issue in our country, often becoming a leading cause of bankruptcy. It’s estimated that around 114,000 residents in Oakland County are grappling with this financial struggle. This program’s intention? To lighten that load. The strategy involves identifying qualifying debts, purchasing them for a fraction of their worth, and then wiping the slate clean with a simple notification in the mail!

A Life-Changing Impact

The chair of the Board of Commissioners, David T. Woodward, couldn’t agree more about the importance of this initiative. “Shedding the heavy burden of medical debt can have a life-changing impact on our area families. We’re celebrating helping more than 14,000 residents across the county,” he stated with passion. “This initiative really shows our commitment to building a healthier, stronger community.”

Joining Forces for a Cause

So how does this work? Undue Medical Debt partners with local health systems and hospitals to pinpoint eligible debts, specifically targeting those whose earnings fall at or below four times the federal poverty level, or whose medical debt exceeds
5 percent of their annual income. Once identified, these medical debts are bought and forgiven, giving many residents a fresh start.

Looking Ahead

Allison Sesso, the president and CEO of Undue Medical Debt, is thrilled about the partnership with Oakland County and hopes this initiative can ease some of the financial stress families face today. “Medical debt is a financial and emotional burden that forces families to make tough choices,” she mentioned. “I hope that with these efforts, we’ll lift some of the stigma associated with medical debt and pave the way for future improvements.”

Community Health and Economic Benefits

But this program isn’t just about individual families. The effects stretch out into the community, promoting better health outcomes and boosting the local economy. Earlier this year, with the help of Michigan’s state legislature, funding was also allocated to similar initiatives in Oakland, Wayne, Ingham, and Kalamazoo counties, proving that medical debt relief is truly a growing priority.

Your Next Steps

It’s important to note that while this relief is valuable, it is driven by a source-based model. This means the healthcare provider must agree to the partnership before relief can be granted. So, as the holidays roll around, let’s celebrate this fantastic news and the hope it brings to our community. Here’s to a healthier, happier Oakland County!
