What is HAVEN?

HAVEN stands out as the county’s only 24-hour emergency shelter dedicated to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, including their children. Each year, the organization reaches out to nearly 30,000 individuals, offering them shelter, counseling, advocacy, and educational programs. With the rising demand for these critical services, HAVEN has become a beacon of hope for countless individuals navigating challenging and often dangerous circumstances.

The Growing Demand for Support

CEO Christine Kinal shares some eye-opening statistics: “It affects one-in-three Michiganders.” This statistic underscores the fact that domestic violence and sexual assault are not just issues elsewhere—they touch lives right here in our neighborhoods. “We’re serving victims of crime. Once they come through HAVEN, they’re survivors,” Kinal notes. This transition from victim to survivor is central to HAVEN’s mission. However, Kinal emphasizes, “If we can’t provide the basic needs, then we’re just not hitting the mark.” This acknowledgment of the basic needs is what has spurred the community into action.
