Pontiac Celebrates Veteran-Friendly Employers at Annual Conference

This past week, Pontiac was the place to be as the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) held its fourth annual Veteran-Friendly Employers Innovation Conference. This event, buzzing with enthusiasm, brought together more than 75 attendees from nearly 70 businesses across the state, all dedicated to supporting our military veterans. The atmosphere was filled with inspiration and camaraderie as businesses exchanged ideas on how to better hire, train, and retain veterans.

Honoring Exceptional Employers

During the event, four businesses were awarded the prestigious 2024 MVAA Employer Innovator Awards. The winners included:

  • Amphenol Borisch Technologies from Kentwood
  • Peckham from Flint
  • Rocket Companies from Detroit
  • DTE Energy

These companies were recognized for their outstanding efforts in creating pathways for veterans in the workforce. Erik Schreur, an employment analyst with MVAA, highlighted the unique skills and experiences that veterans bring to Michigan’s job market. He emphasized, “Military veterans possess a unique set of skills and experiences that have value to the Michigan workforce.” Schreur pointed out that many employers are tapping into this talent pool, especially as veterans transition back to civilian life.

United Wholesale Mortgage Steps Up for Veterans

The event also celebrated United Wholesale Mortgage (UWM), which received Gold-level Veteran-Friendly Employer status. This recognition was a testament to their exceptional initiatives aimed at reaching out to veterans. Laura Lawson, UWM’s chief people officer, expressed pride in the achievement, stating, “At UWM, we prioritize creating opportunities for veterans transitioning to civilian careers after their service is completed.” Their commitment not only helps veterans find jobs but also supports them in every aspect of their post-service lives.

Upcoming Veteran Events

In addition to the conference, several exciting events are on the horizon for veterans in Michigan:

  • The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency will host its third annual Women Veterans Conference from October 3-5 at the Four Points by Sheraton in Novi. Tickets are priced at $30 for women veterans. This year’s focus is on celebrating and supporting women who have served and continue to serve.
  • The Holly American Legion Post 149 will offer a Line Dancing Class on September 30 at 6 p.m. For those enthusiastic about dancing, this is a great chance to learn something new!
  • Faithful Veterans can enjoy a Taco Tuesday Mexican Buffet on October 1 at the Oxford American Legion Post 108, followed by a Broasted Chicken Buffet the next day. Both events run from 4 to 6 p.m.
  • Don’t miss the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the new location of the Holly Area Veterans Resource Center on October 3 at noon. Celebrate with some coffee and donuts starting at 10 a.m.!

There’s something for everyone, whether you’re looking to participate in fun activities or gather vital information about resources available for veterans.

Support for Veterans

If you or someone you know is a veteran or a service member in need of support, don’t hesitate to reach out to the Michigan Veterans Resource Service Center at 1-800-MICH-VET (1-800-642-4838). They’re there to help you navigate the various benefits and resources that are available.

The strong community spirit shown at the conference and various events highlights the commitment of Michigan businesses and organizations to support veterans. By coming together to honor and assist those who have served, Michigan is fostering a brighter future for our heroes and their families. So, mark your calendars and get involved to show your support!
