Longtime Volunteer Recollects 32 Years of Memories from Milford Memories Festival

The quaint township of Milford, Michigan, is all set to host its annual summer spectacle, the Milford Memories Festival. This year, more than 100,000 eager attendees are expected to throng to this colorful fest, which includes the display of artistry from over 300 artists, numerous food choices, a sand volleyball competition, a Sunday 5K run, and much more.

A particular face in the crowd, Joan Spiroff, age 83, has been a steadfast representative of the Milford Memories Festival for an astounding 32 years, since its very beginning. “The festival has expanded dramatically over the years,” she shared, recounting the festival’s growth.

The recent park restoration has led to diversifying positions of different attractions, with Joan now as an official guide, jovially going by the name of “Waldo”. As Waldo, she not only welcomes everyone at the festival but also assists attendees in locating various booth exhibitions. In addition, she offers a QR code guiding to the festival’s layout.

“Originally, the festival took place in a house located in my neighborhood. The initial couple of years were earmarked to showcase a Civil War play, followed by a Civil War reenactment. Gradually, I help to shape it into the remarkable event it is today,” she recounted.

The festival’s plenitude of offerings is carefully designed to cater to diverse tastes. Running from Huron Street to Summit are numerous art booths, while the heart of Central Park houses a bustling kid’s activity area. For the thrill-seekers, a rock wall has been installed and a beer tent concluded to be serving until midnight.

Artists from across the country have come down to display their creativity, covering a wide range of handiwork from glass jewelry, woodwork, art-adorned clothes to nifty bags.

“What’s special about the festival that you hold dearly?” Joan was asked, to which she replied, “Getting to interact with everyone.” When asked what keeps her motivated, she shared with radiant optimism, “The very essence of life propels me. I wake up each day with a purpose, aiming to be content and keeping on.”

When asked about her plans following the festival, Joan shared her upcoming appearance at the Woodward Dream Cruise event next week.
