Pontiac’s Community Comes Together for Second Annual Senior Summit

Pontiac — It’s a bustling atmosphere filled with warmth and enthusiasm as the second annual Senior Summit took place on September 13, 2024, at Welcome Missionary Baptist Church. This wonderful gathering aimed to connect seniors with essential resources and services while offering various health screenings and informative talks from experts in the community.

State Senator Jeremy Moss, who oversees the Pontiac district, spearheaded this vibrant event. He has been a champion for senior citizens, previously organizing the event in Southfield for ten consecutive years, though he did have to skip one due to COVID-19. This year, as he welcomed Pontiac into the fold, Moss shared the growth of the summit over the past decade. “Ten years ago, it started as just a handful of us in the City Council chambers, and now we’ve filled out the entire Southfield Pavilion with hundreds of constituents participating,” he reminisced.

Integration of Pontiac into a Supportive Network

As Moss expanded the summit to Pontiac, he was eager to ensure that seniors in both communities had equal access to crucial information and services. “When the district lines shifted, I wanted to host an event here in Pontiac too, so we have one in the south end and the north end,” he explained. The event welcomed several local officials, including Attorney General Dana Nessel, who praised the initiative. “Thank you so much for continuing to put on these amazing events,” she expressed, highlighting the importance of ensuring people are aware of available services.

Resource-Rich Environment for Seniors

Over 30 organizations dedicated to senior services participated, creating a comprehensive one-stop shop for older adults. Attendees could browse booths, speak directly with representatives, and learn about various programs designed to aid them. For instance, the Wayne Health Mobile Unit was present, offering health screenings, COVID-19 PCR testing, and vaccinations. Additionally, Healing Heart Safety Services provided essential Narcan training, while the Oakland County Health Department administered flu shots.

Members of organizations like AgeWays Nonprofit Senior Services and Disability Network Eastern Michigan engaged with seniors, answering questions and providing valuable resources. Local government representatives from the Oakland County Neighborhood and Housing Development Office and Oakland County Older Adult Services were also there, eager to assist.

Focus on Senior Issues

During the event, discussions revolved around significant issues impacting seniors today, such as identity theft and scam protection. Moss emphasized the importance of such events in the community, explaining, “Seniors form the backbone of our community. In Southfield, many have called this area home for decades, and they want to continue living here in their golden years.”

A Community Spirit

Residents flocked to the event, eager to learn more about what the community has to offer. The warm camaraderie present reminded everyone that Pontiac is a place where seniors are valued and cared for. “This is truly what I have dedicated my service to — to ensure that long-term residents feel supported and connected,” Moss remarked passionately.

The enthusiasm and dedication shown during the Senior Summit exemplified the spirit of community and collaboration. For all who participated, it was more than just an event; it was a testament to the strength and resiliency of a community that treasures its older citizens.

Looking Ahead

As the summit concluded, many left feeling more informed and connected, with a renewed sense of community. With plans for future summits already in the works, there remains an optimistic outlook for even more successful gatherings to come.
