It is with heavy hearts that the community of Emmitsburg, Maryland, bids farewell to Sister Joan Drega, a devoted educator and beloved member of the Daughters of Charity, who passed away at the age of 88. Sister Joan, also known as Josephine Mary, took her final breath at Villa St. Michael on February 7, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering dedication to education and a spirit that touched the lives of countless individuals.

Early Life and Calling

Born on April 27, 1936, in the vibrant city of Baltimore, Maryland, Sister Joan was the daughter of Francis Walter Drega and Florence Ziomek Drega. Growing up in the nurturing community of St. Elizabeth Parish, she cultivated her deep sense of faith and commitment to helping others. After graduating from Seton High School in 1954, Joan felt a calling that would shape her future. She entered the Daughters of Charity on January 26, 1955, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey.

Academic Achievements

Sister Joan was not only a passionate educator but also an inspired learner. Between 1965 and 1986, she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from St. Joseph College, a Master of Arts Degree in Teaching from Trinity College, and a Master of Science Degree in Elementary Education Administration from the University of Dayton. Her thirst for knowledge fueled her commitment to providing the best education for her students.

A Lifelong Commitment to Education

Sister Joan’s teaching career began at St. Ambrose School in Endicott, New York, where she made her mark from 1956 to 1960. Throughout the years, she taught at various schools, including St. Peter Cathedral School in Delaware, St. Francis School in Virginia, and St. Dominic School in Baltimore. Her passion for nurturing young minds extended to positions as principal at several institutions, inspiring a generation of students and guiding fellow teachers.

Beyond the Classroom

Sister Joan’s influence extended beyond the classroom as she took on roles such as Development Director for the Daughters of Charity Southeast Province and as a liaison for health care ministries in Jacksonville, Florida, and Detroit, Michigan. She spent her last years at the Bethany Community in Emmitsburg, where she focused on development efforts with Seton Heritage Ministries, never straying far from her mission of service.

A Heart of Gold

Known for her keen sense of humor and love of life, Sister Joan also organized crab feast fundraisers to support those living in poverty. Her infectious laughter and genuine care for others endeared her to many. Whether she was in a classroom, a hospital, or the community, Sister Joan was always a source of encouragement and hope.

Remembering Sister Joan

Sadly, Sister Joan’s journey on earth came to an end, but her spirit lives on through her nieces, friends, and her Sisters in Community. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Lawrence and Raymond Drega, as well as her sister, Frances Susie.

Final Farewells

To honor Sister Joan’s memory, a Wake Service will take place on Wednesday, February 12, at the Villa Chapel in Emmitsburg at 6:00 pm. This will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial scheduled for 11:00 am on Thursday, February 13, 2025, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Sister Joan’s name to the Daughters of Charity, ensuring that her legacy of service and dedication continues to inspire future generations. The impact she made in the lives of many will never be forgotten, and her love will forever resonate in the hearts of those she touched.
