Southfield Celebrates Annual Photo Prize Competition Winners

In the vibrant city of Southfield, excitement filled the air as residents gathered for the award ceremony of the 8th Annual Photo Prize Competition held on September 19 at City Hall. This delightful event showcased the remarkable talent within the community and honored the incredible photographs submitted by local artists.

Meet the Winners

The spotlight of the evening shone brightly on the winners, with the first place award going to Robert Schmidt. His captivating photo of the iconic Southfield Town Center received an impressive total of over 1,650 votes from the public. Schmidt’s stunning imagery perfectly captured the architectural beauty that Southfield has to offer.

Coming in second place was Darren Hood, recognized for his outstanding photograph of the SFLD sign located on the Southfield Municipal Campus. Darren’s work resonated with many, earning him a spot among the top three contenders.

Rounding out the winners was Michael Beneson, whose photo of the Southfield Public Library secured him the third-place title. Michael’s ability to portray not just the structure itself but the essence of the library’s role in the community was truly commendable.

Celebrating Community Talent

The annual Southfield Photo Prize competition is not just a contest; it’s a celebration of art and community spirit. Sponsored by the City of Southfield, this year’s competition aimed to highlight the natural and architectural beauty scattered throughout the city. Over the summer, the competition drew a fantastic response, with a total of 159 submissions received.

The submissions were meticulously reviewed by the Total Living Commission, which handpicked the top 25 photos for public voting. From July 1 to September 1, art lovers and residents alike had their say, casting over 3,750 unique votes online and through public displays at the parks and recreation building.

Southfield’s Mayor, Dr. Ken Siver, expressed his admiration for the quality of the competition this year. He stated, “The 2024 Southfield Photo Prize has once again highlighted the incredible talent within our community. The winning photographs not only showcase artistic excellence, but also tell compelling stories about our city’s vibrant culture and landscapes.” Mayor Siver added heartfelt congratulations to all the winners for their skillful photography that truly captures the heart of Southfield.

2025 Southfield Photo Prize are now being accepted. Aspiring photographers are encouraged to submit their work via email to PhotoContest@cityofsouthfield.com by Friday, May 30, 2025. Those interested in participating can find full contest details on the city’s official website.
