Sponsor Our ArticlesIn Northern Michigan, SpotLab, a design/build firm founded by Tessa French and Zeb Burge, is reshaping the home remodeling landscape. Their whimsical and innovative designs focus on infusing spaces with character and creativity. After transitioning from the retail and hospitality sectors during the pandemic, the couple embraced home renovation, transforming a fixer-upper into the first project of their new venture. With striking designs and unique projects like geodesic domes and log cabins, SpotLab is making its mark in home construction and offering clients distinctive remodeling experiences.
In the enchanting landscapes of Northern Michigan, something whimsical is brewing in the home remodeling realm. Meet SpotLab, a vibrant design/build firm that is sparking joy in the world of home renovations. Ba-dum, ba-dum, ba-dum! This innovative duo, Tessa French and Zeb Burge, are on a mission to recreate spaces that are loads of fun while still being super practical. If you’re tired of the mundane and looking for a home that tells your story, SpotLab might just be your fairy godmother!
Believe it or not, Tessa and Zeb’s journey into home renovations didn’t start with a hammer and nail. Instead, they were juggling high-profile careers in retail and hospitality in the buzzing streets of New York City. Zeb took the lead as vice president of construction at Equinox Fitness, while Tessa dazzled as the director of design. But the hustle and bustle of city life eventually gave way to a desire for tranquility, prompting the couple to pack their bags and head to Michigan during the pandemic. Their first stop? Tessa’s family’s cozy hideaway in Gaylord. But as they settled in, the creative muses tugged at their hearts and said, “Hey, why not take on a project?”
Like many DIY aficionados, Tessa and Zeb embarked on a classic journey—the quest for a fixer-upper. Their journey led them to an A-frame house with endless potential. With rolling up their sleeves and a big dose of determination, the couple dove into a six-month renovation project, working side by side to breathe new life into this neglected space. The end result? An awe-inspiring home that sparked the birth of SpotLab, an idea fueled by big dreams nestled in a charming northern town.
Now, when it comes to design, SpotLab is not just building structures; they’re crafting *experiences*. With a flair for the dramatic, they incorporate bold colors, curvy lines, and unexpected materials into their creations. Their distinct style is attracting clients who seek one-of-a-kind designs that reflect their own unique flair and way of life. One of their standout projects is with a client from Lost Woods campground in Boyne Falls, who imagined a *futuristic geodesic dome* to elevate her property.
Now, building a dome isn’t as easy as tossing a ball in the park! SpotLab faced some serious design challenges, thanks to the round layout that lacks traditional walls. Not to worry—the creative minds at SpotLab got to work. They ingeniously designed a separate bathroom along with a kitchenette while keeping the open feel intact. By creatively attaching the kitchenette to the exterior of the bathroom wall, they ensured that the dome retained its airy vibe while maximizing functionality. What a grand work of art!
Moving past domes, SpotLab is showing off their versatility with their first-ever log cabin project at Six Mile Lake! Talk about an adventurous expansion into new domains. Their commitment to local projects reflects a love for the Michigan milieu, captivating residents and visitors in the picturesque areas of Charlevoix and Boyne.
But it’s not just about building cool structures. The dome at Lost Woods was crafted with visitors in mind, designed to provide a distinctive rental experience throughout the year. It may be just 400 square feet, but don’t let the size fool you! This cozy abode cleverly incorporates a fully equipped 55-square-foot bathroom that epitomizes SpotLab’s ethos: making the most of every single inch while seamlessly blending practicality with creative design.
However, the road to innovation is rarely a smooth one! The process didn’t come without its hurdles. Blanford faced challenges with zoning approvals and, believe it or not, the dome is now the first in the area to incorporate a bathroom! The Lost Woods campground features a century-old farmhouse, a barn event center, and a quaint A-frame cabin. It offers a delightful slice of eclectic Northern Michigan life that is hard to resist!
As the excitement surrounding home renovations rises, Tessa and Zeb are wholeheartedly focused on their mission: creating spaces that are not only functional but bursting with creativity and joy. For anyone dreaming of a unique transformation or seeking inspiration to revamp their home, look no further than SpotLab, where imagination meets craftsmanship!
