Wayne County Election Candidates: Who’s Running This Year?

As we get closer to the election, there’s a lot of buzz in Wayne County as various candidates prepare to vie for important positions. Let’s take a friendly look at who’s in the running and what they bring to the table.

Raphael Washington, DWayne County Sheriff

First up is Raphael Washington, who’s looking to keep his position as the Wayne County Sheriff. He’s been part of the law enforcement scene for quite some time now, thanks to his extensive experience with the Detroit Police Department. After serving in various roles including patrol officer and lieutenant, he finally joined the sheriff’s department back in 2009. Washington was appointed sheriff in 2021 and was elected for a partial term in 2022. He’s not only focused on law enforcement but also values community safety, being an active member of the National Rifle Association and a longtime firearms instructor. He’s certainly got a big focus on promoting gun safety.

T. P. Nykoriak

On the opposite end, T. P. Nykoriak also known as Taras Nykoriak, is throwing his hat into the ring for sheriff. He’s got a bit of a rocky past, having run for the same position as a Democrat in 2020 and for county commissioner in 2018. He suggests that changes need to happen in the department and plans to appoint a new undersheriff. Despite his legal troubles in the past related to a federal prison sentence, he believes he has a vision to address violence in neighborhoods and steer nonviolent offenders away from jail.

Bernard J. Youngblood

Next on the ballot, we have Bernard J. Youngblood, who has been the Wayne County Register of Deeds since 2000. He seeks re-election for his seventh term in a family tradition that dates back to 1941. The Youngblood family has a history of service in Wayne County. Outside of the office, this Grosse Pointe Farms resident is known for his singing talents at local venues, blending community service with his love for music. With a military background and experience in real estate, Youngblood has a well-rounded profile.

Afaf Ahmad

Afaf Ahmad is another name we can’t overlook, known for her outspoken views as a radio host and commentator. She often tackles political matters affecting Arab-American communities. With a background in media and activism, Ahmad aims to shake things up and bring to light issues that concern her constituents. Although she doesn’t have a campaign website up yet, her presence on social media is quite remarkable.

Todd Briggs

If you’re looking for an experienced attorney, consider Todd Briggs, who has been practicing law for 36 years. Aiming to give everyone a voice in the legal system, he has served in various legal settings. When not in the courtroom, he enjoys swimming and participates actively in helping special needs swimmers through the Special Olympics.

Macie Gaines

Macie Gaines, a probate attorney from Grosse Pointe Park, has a notable past alongside the late Judge Adam Shakoor. She advocates diligently for vulnerable individuals in society and aims to enhance protections against financial exploitation. With her extensive experience and dedication, she’s ready to make her mark.

Other Notable Candidates

The candidate pool doesn’t stop there. Ron Haywood, who previously served as a prosecutor for Wayne County, is now focusing on justice for crime victims. Then we have Daniel Mercier, who balances law with real estate, and Jim Jolly, currently a city councilman with promises for a just community. Victoria I. Shackelford has also grabbed attention since becoming the chief judge in Taylor in 2021.

Additionally, Malaika Ramsey-Heath and William Burton, Jr. are competing to enhance judicial equity and fairness within the community. Throughout, we see legal professionals with vast experience across varied fields stepping up to serve Wayne County.

In Conclusion

As Election Day approaches, the choices become clearer, and it’s essential for the residents of Wayne County to stay informed. Each candidate is bringing their flair, skills, and ideas—whether it’s law enforcement experience, community activism, or legal professionalism. Stay tuned for more as we navigate the exciting election landscape ahead!
