Hey folks, a big piece of cool news is coming out of Westland. The city’s leaders are all geared up to create a smashing new park that’s going to cost around 12 million dollars. They’re calling it Nankin Square and it’s gonna turn a nearly four-acre piece of land into a recreational heaven.

The land sits between the Westland Community Health Center on Warren Road and the main fire station at Central City Parkway. The groundbreaking bit is going to kick off this month and they plan to wrap it all up by September 2025.

City officials reckon that this fancy new park is gonna make a huge difference to the nearby Westland Mall property. Most locals reckon that the mall’s current look is a bit on the shabby side. The hope is that the park will make the area more appealing and, who knows, encourage the mall owners to give that place a bit of a facelift.

Nankin Square is set to have a whole bunch of fun stuff. How about an amphitheater, special play areas for kids, a walking path, a grand lawn and even spots for food trucks? Not bad, huh? Plus, they plan to hold outdoor fitness events, concerts and other cool stuff like that, too.

The city leaders think that having such a cool park will make the Westland Mall property a hotspot for a mixed-use development. Other nearby places, such as Livonia, are tryin’ to do the same thing – create shared spaces that bring people together and attract young families.

It may be news to you, but Westland doesn’t really have a traditional downtown. So, city officials see this part of Warren Road as their much-awaited opportunity to create a downtown vibe. And Nankin Square is gonna play a huge part in that.

The final price tag for Nankin Square is predicted to be around $11.6 million. Westland’s Tax Increment Finance Authority is chipping in with $8 million for the project, and the city has bagged some grants from the State of Michigan and Wayne County to help out with the rest of the cost.
