DETROIT, Mich. — Novi Detroit Catholic Central, the No. 1 team in Michigan, saw its unbeaten regular season end Saturday night, Oct. 24, when No. 19 Birmingham Brother Rice beat the Shamrocks in overtime of the CHSL Prep Bowl at Ford Field.
Catholic Central had the ball first in the extra period and needed just two snaps to reach the Brother Rice 1. The Warriors then stuffed two straight inside runs to keep the Shamrocks out of the end zone, and running back Deondre Hill punched in the winner on Brother Rice’s possession.
The finish capped a game that swung back and forth. JJ Chevalier scored for Catholic Central late in the fourth quarter to put the Shamrocks back in front, but Brother Rice answered with a Hill touchdown that made it 25-22 with just over a minute to play. Catholic Central drove into range, and Ty Goddard drilled a 42-yard field goal with 20 seconds left to tie the score and send it to overtime.
The loss snapped a 22-game win streak for the Shamrocks, the longest active run in the state. It was also Brother Rice’s first win over Catholic Central since a 41-14 victory in September 2014.
Both teams now turn to the state playoffs, which open Friday, Oct. 30.
