Former Mayor Elaine McLain stepped down from her position on the City Commission on November 18, 2024. As a result, Therese Longe has been appointed as the new Mayor, but that means there’s now a crucial opening on the Commission that needs to be filled.
In accordance with the City Charter, the City Commission has 30 days to appoint a new Commissioner after McLain’s resignation. That’s where you come in! If you’ve ever thought about getting involved in local governance and making a difference in your community, this could be your chance. The newly appointed Commissioner will serve until the next regular municipal election, slated for November 4, 2025.
Starting from December 16, 2024, the City is officially accepting applications to fill this vacancy. Interested individuals can apply through various channels. Whether you prefer getting the application in person, downloading it online, or filling it out digitally, the City Clerk’s office has made it accessible for all. To qualify, you must be a resident of Birmingham for at least one year and be a registered voter.
