On October 7, 2024, the Berkley City Council made the significant decision to hire Crystal VanVleck as the city’s next City Manager. This exciting new chapter for Berkley comes after an extensive search, facilitated by the consulting firm GovHR/MGT.
Crystal VanVleck brings a wealth of experience to her new position. Holding a Master of Urban Planning degree from Wayne State University, she boasts over 10 years of municipal government experience. Most notably, she has spent more than nine of those years serving in a leadership role as the Deputy City Manager of Community Services in the City of Oak Park. Her solid background and deep understanding of city workings make her a great choice for Berkley.
As the news broke about her selection, VanVleck expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “I’m honored to have been selected to serve the City of Berkley as the next City Manager and am excited to join the Berkley team to help continue the City’s forward momentum.” Her words reflect a real sense of commitment and optimism for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
Berkley’s Mayor, Bridget Dean, shared her excitement, confirming the unanimous decision of the City Council to appoint VanVleck. She noted, “Her excitement and enthusiasm for the position is palpable. She brings solid municipal government experience, leadership skills, and a deep understanding of our community to the position.” It’s clear that city leaders are eager to work alongside the new manager to ensure the city continues on its upward trajectory.
Mayor Pro Tem Ross Gavin also voiced his support, emphasizing the qualities that VanVleck will bring to her new role. “I’m elated by the experience, passion, understanding, and innovation that Crystal will bring to every facet of city services,” he remarked. Gavin expressed confidence that VanVleck would effectively lead the team and be a good steward of taxpayer dollars while continuing Berkley’s ongoing progress.
Councilmember Dennis Hennen echoed these sentiments, saying, “I’m thrilled to welcome Ms. VanVleck to Berkley. Her experience and the impressive portfolio of projects she has led in Oak Park give me great confidence in her ability to guide our city forward.” The community can expect a significant positive impact under her leadership as VanVleck works to address the needs and aspirations of Berkley residents.
With the City Council’s vote finalized, VanVleck’s appointment awaits completion of a background check and successful contract negotiations, which are set to begin shortly. As this process unfolds, all eyes will be on Berkley, eagerly anticipating the innovations and improvements that their new City Manager will bring.
