News Summary

Great Minds, a leader in educational curriculum, is subleasing its renovated headquarters in Richmond, Virginia, as remote work becomes the norm. After four years filled with vibrant office culture and a life-sized T-Rex replica, the firm shifts focus to smaller meeting spaces. This decision reflects broader workplace trends, showcasing the transition in company dynamics. It’s an exciting time for new tenants to inherit a uniquely designed workspace as Great Minds plans for future growth.

Great Minds Moves Out of Award-Winning Richmond HQ, Leaving Iconic T-Rex Behind for New Tenants

In a surprising turn of events, Great Minds, a leading education curriculum developer, has decided to sublease its eye-catching headquarters located at 840 Hermitage Road in Richmond. After just four years in this stunning, renovated building, it’s time for a new chapter!

The Decision to Leave

So, what led to this noteworthy decision? It appears that as the world adapts to changing workplace norms, Great Minds has found that the majority of its 1,000-strong workforce is working remotely. Only about 100 employees are based in Virginia, making the expansive 19,000-square-foot office space seem less essential. It’s hard to justify maintaining such a large footprint when everyone’s working from home and just making video calls!

A Quick Look Back

Great Minds doesn’t just pack up and leave; their time in the building has been quite the journey! They originally leased the property in 2019, and it underwent a complete renovation to create a vibrant and inviting workspace. Staff began to move in during 2021, and the building quickly became the envy of others. With modern art, mid-century inspired furniture, and open-air workspaces, it was a dream office!

Add to that the presence of a life-sized Tyrannosaurus rex replica named Stan, and you’ve got a workspace that people talked about. This award-winning renovation was designed by Fultz & Singh Architects and executed by LF Jennings, showcasing just how serious Great Minds was about creating an exceptional environment for its employees.

A Shift in Focus

Due to the evolution of work dynamics, Great Minds has determined that its future lies in investing in smaller meeting spaces rather than maintaining a large office. A realistic decision considering how many companies are reevaluating their physical footprint in an increasingly digital world!

The firm has been a significant player in the education sector since it was founded in 2007. With a focus on developing curricula for public, private, and charter schools, Great Minds has built a reputation for excellence. However, we can’t forget that they have faced challenges all along the way. Just last year, the organization made headlines with layoffs that reduced its overall workforce from around 1,450 to 1,371, reflecting the realities many businesses face as they navigate post-pandemic adjustments.

What Lies Ahead

Great Minds, now led by CEO John White, has plans to invest in more collaborative meeting spaces for employees working remotely. They are really putting a focus on creating opportunities for everyone to come together, even if that doesn’t mean having a large office! Plus, with the influx of private equity funding in 2022, including a hefty $150 million investment from A-Street Fund, the organization appears well-positioned for future growth and innovation.

The New Tenants

As Great Minds prepares to leave its iconic building, it’s exciting to think about who might step into the space next. Other tenants in the trendy Sauer Center complex include CarMax’s Midtown office and a Bon Secours sports medicine facility. Whoever takes over will definitely inherit an impressive, thoughtfully designed workspace complete with its very own T-Rex!

As the story unfolds, it’ll be fascinating to see how Great Minds will reshape its focus while leaving a remarkable legacy behind at 840 Hermitage Road. No doubt the building will continue to thrive and inspire new tenants in this evolving landscape of workspaces!
