Having previously served as a senior business consultant and associate regional director, Yoder is well-equipped to lead the SBDC office at Michigan Technological University. His dedication to fostering small business success will continue Marohnic’s legacy of client-focused service. Exciting news is buzzing in Houghton! Daniel Yoder has recently been appointed as the Upper Peninsula regional director for the Michigan Small Business Development Center (SBDC), taking over the reins from the retiring Laura Marohnic. With a bright future ahead, Yoder is ready to guide businesses across the region.
Yoder isn’t new to the SBDC family. He first joined the team back in 2019 as a senior business consultant. His commitment and hard work paid off when he was promoted to associate regional director in 2024. Now, he’s stepping into this pivotal role that oversees 15 counties in Michigan’s beautiful Upper Peninsula.
This is a significant transition for Yoder as he takes on the responsibility of leading, planning, and administering the regional operations. The SBDC office is hosted by Michigan Technological University in Houghton, making it a crucial hub for local entrepreneurs and small business owners.
In his new position, Yoder is expected to continue the excellent work established by Marohnic, who was known for her client-first approach and extensive community involvement. Yoder has already made a name for himself in the region, having coached and guided hundreds of business owners and entrepreneurs during his tenure. His dedication is reinforced through a student intern program established by his predecessor, which enhances the program’s outreach.
The Michigan SBDC plays a vital role in fostering small business success across the state. Yoder’s leadership will help provide no-cost consulting services, vital business education, market research, and even resources for technology commercialization to new and existing businesses throughout Michigan’s vast 83 counties. This includes free export services and cybersecurity resources, critical for today’s evolving business landscape.
For anyone thinking about taking their business to the next level or starting fresh, the SBDC is the perfect starting point. And if you want to talk to someone about your business ideas, Yoder and his team are just a phone call away at 906-487-2469.
Before his time at the SBDC, Yoder brought nearly two decades of experience in banking and finance. He held various positions, including personal banker, branch manager, and even vice president/commercial lender. This wealth of experience gives him a robust understanding of the financial aspects that small businesses need to navigate effectively.
Yoder is not just highly qualified but also has the academic credentials to back it up. He holds a master’s degree in business administration from Michigan Technological University and a bachelor’s degree from Wright State University. Additionally, he’s part of the Michigan SBDC’s State Export Assistance Team, consolidating his commitment to fostering local businesses.
The future seems bright for the Upper Peninsula region under Yoder’s leadership. His collaborative managerial style has already earned praise from various community leaders and stakeholders. With his experience and dedication, the SBDC is poised to create an even greater positive impact on the business community.
