As the second anniversary of the tragic mass shooting at Michigan State University draws near, the community is gearing up for a solemn yet uplifting commemoration. This event, set for February 13, 2025, aims to honor the lives lost while also fostering healing and togetherness among students, staff, and faculty.
A dedicated committee made up of students, staff, and faculty members has been hard at work planning a meaningful day of remembrance and service. They have teamed up with the Office for Resource and Support Coordination to create an experience that not only remembers those we lost but also builds community and offers support. It’s a wonderful way to turn a difficult moment into an opportunity for connection and positivity.
On that day, most classes will be canceled, allowing everyone to take part in the activities planned throughout campus. The university will remain open to support its students and the community during this time of reflection and unity. Classes will restart on February 14, 2025, with no assignments or exams scheduled for that day, making it easier for students to participate in the memorial events.
The lineup for February 13 is packed with events aimed at supporting mental health and fostering community bonds. Here’s what to expect throughout the day:
In recognition of the emotional weight of this day, Counseling & Psychiatric Services and the MSU Employee Assistance Program will be offering drop-in appointments from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on February 13, providing necessary support for anyone who may need it.
In addition to the day’s events, a memorial bench has been set up near Berkey Hall to honor the memories of those lost in the shooting. This bench is the result of an eight-month effort and stands as a testament to the university’s commitment to creating a lasting memorial on campus that honors the lives of Arielle Anderson, Brian Fraser, and Alexandria Verner.
Community members are encouraged to participate fully in this significant day. For more resources and support related to the commemoration, the community can visit SpartansTogether.msu.edu.
As the date approaches, let us wrap our arms around each other in love and support, transforming this day into a beacon of hope and unity for everyone on campus.
