In a heartfelt community moment, Novi, Michigan, bids farewell to a beloved local figure, Mark Francis Schikora, who passed away on January 15, 2025, at the age of 75. A devoted family man, a proud Navy veteran, and a passionate sports fan, Mark’s legacy will be cherished by family, friends, and neighbors alike.
Mark Francis Schikora was born on December 7, 1949, in Detroit, Michigan. Many remember him fondly as the son of Donald and Cecilia (Plock) Schikora, who have also passed away, as did his Uncle Walter Plock. Throughout his life, Mark maintained a keen sense of family, which was evident in everything he did. He is greatly missed by his wife, Sharon (née Lakomy) Schikora, with whom he shared a beautiful marriage lasting over 43 years. They met in 1979 through mutual friends, and their love blossomed over the years.
Mark and Sharon were married on February 13, 1981, and together they raised two wonderful sons, Joseph (Kathryn) Schikora and Steven Schikora. Adding joy to his family life were his three cherished grandchildren, Evelyn, Robert, and Henry, who brought warmth and laughter to his days. Mark is also survived by his brother, John Schikora, along with sisters-in-law Mary (Bill) McKee and Phyllis Bieda. His extended family, including many nieces and nephews such as Brian, Sarah, Jennifer, Sean, and Shannon, were all deeply touched by his affection.
Mark’s journey included a proud chapter as a United States Navy veteran. He served during the tumultuous Vietnam War from 1970 to 1972, an experience that shaped his character and instilled in him a sense of duty. After his military service, Mark transitioned to a successful career in telecommunications, dedicating an impressive 37 years to the field. He started out as a field service technician and advanced his career until his retirement from AT&T (formerly Michigan Bell) in 2007, earning the camaraderie and affection of his colleagues.
When he wasn’t working hard to provide for his family, Mark could often be found honing his green thumb in the yard or tending to his beloved gardens. His love for home and family went hand in hand, leading to cherished moments during family vacations. The Schikora family took delightful camping trips to places like Higgins Lake and went on memorable road trips to gorgeous spots such as Petoskey and Mackinac Island.
Sports were another significant aspect of Mark’s life. A die-hard fan of the University of Michigan football team, the Detroit Red Wings, and the Detroit Tigers, Mark shared many thrilling moments with friends and family at games, especially at Comerica Park for Tigers matches. His enthusiasm for sports was infectious, drawing in everyone around him into the excitement.
As the community grieves, they also celebrate the profound impact Mark had on many lives. A Funeral Mass is scheduled for January 22, 2025, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Northville, Michigan, beginning at 11:00 am. Family and friends can pay their respects during visitation at the Harry J. Will Funeral Home in Livonia, which will be held on January 21, 2025, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, concluding with a Rosary Service at 7:00 pm. Additional visitation will take place at the church just before the Mass. Following his wishes, cremation will occur after the funeral services.
Mark’s spirit lives on in the hearts of all who knew him. His kindness, dedication, and love for family will never be forgotten.
